What turns you off to a name?

Anyone have any names they are really turned off by? If so, is it because of how they sound, because they are too popular, because you associate them with someone you don't like, or for some other reason? You don't necessarily need to share a specific name unless you want; I was mainly wondering what are people's reasons behind disliking certain names.

For me, I am turned off the most by names that I associate strongly with a particular person, especially if he or she is a mean or rude person. There are also a couple names I don't like simply because of how they sound.

I know some people are really turned off by very popular names, but that doesn't bother me for the most part. Some of my favorite names are actually in the top ten SS list.

I side eye names that are so far out there that they don't even look like names.  If it is so obscure that your poor child will be correcting people or changing it later in life then just walk away...

I dislike names that when I look at them I have no idea how to pronounce it.  I'm a teacher and those names are difficult to pronounce and mess up.

Most of the time I am turned off because of the spelling or how far out there they are.  There are 3 names that I will never use because of middle school and high school :)

Mostly if it won't age well.  This mostly applies to girl names and usually encompasses trendy names, youneek names, and madeup names.  I can hardly picture Brixleigh on a grown up woman.

I am not a fan of names that look and/or sound made up.  I am very much a traditionalist when it comes to names so there are tons that I don't like.

i'm definitely turned off by names that are too trendy and by you-neek spellings of perfectly fine names. i also am just not a fan of names that are words (harmony, liberty, patience, etc)... i side-eye a ton of names these days!

I'm a teacher too. It makes picking a name tough! Even though I generally have nice students, once I have had a kid for a year, I tend to associate that name specifically with that kid. As a result, I will probably name my child a name that I have never seen as a teacher, or that I have only ever seen once during my teaching career. Luckily, I have found some pretty, classic names that fit that criteria. Unfortunately, they are names that are pretty popular in the past year or two, so I am sure I will see them a lot in the future!

Popularity doesn't bother me much — I love some top-10 names and some names that aren't top-10,000.

I tend not to like harsh consonants or creative spellings. I dislike the use of "y" as an all-purpose substitution for vowels that I find myself disliking perfectly valid names with Ys in them (ex: I prefer Sonia to Sonya).

Names of people I don't associate nice things with, names that look like someone banged their head against a keyboard and put it on a birth certificate, normal names with absolutely nuts spelling...

Mostly sound.  Popularity doesn't help.

I seem to really dislike the -sh sound in names.  I cringe at Elisha, Alicia, Keisha, etc...

Mostly if it's too "new."  I need a name with history (I'm a historian).  Easily pronounced/makes sense- even if you have to correct it sometimes.  For example, it seems like we always have posts about Isla.  Ok, maybe some moron will say Iz-la but once you say "No, it's eye-la" they can easily see that.  Spelling it Eighla would not make a lot of sense.  This goes with my next complaint:  made up spellings and/or pronunciations.  Someone posted about Rhys and the parents, who allegedly knew how to pronounce it correctly, wanted it to be said Rise instead of Reece.

It needs to sound decent with our name etc.  Mostly, I just need to be able to picture it with us.  I love the sound and everything else about Daphne and Fiona but when I close my eyes, I can't picture a girl named either of those as one of my kids.  I support them for others though!

I am not a fan of hugely popular names just because I think they tend to get a bit boring. Still, I hate when there are super unique spellings...especially ones that can't even be read well. There haven't been too many names I dislike due to association so I guess I got lucky with that one. I feel like teachers have it the hardest though, being surrounded by kids who really could dampen a name choice.

Oh, fun!  I have quite a list.

I don't care for "made up" names.  An example would be the names Jaden and Kaden.  The worst is Braeden/Brayden. They are made up names based on Aiden.  If you like that sound, why not just us the original name?

I'm also not a fan of names based on words for virtues.  Faith, Hope, Charity, Grace, Patience, Prudence, etc.

I don't generally love place names used as names for people.  Dakota, Brooklyn, Sierra, Madison, Savannah.

I never seem to love single syllable names.  Chad, Todd, Grace, Jack, Ann, Grant.

I'm not a fan of trendy names, although I wouldn't let a sudden trend prevent me from using a name I really loved.

Names that sound whiny/nasally or annoying.  At the risk of offending someone, here are some of my least-favorite names: Bryce, Blaine, Brian, Bruce, Ashlynn, Valerie, Jacqueline.

Finally, as a teacher I have a special list of names that have been ruined for me by bratty students over the years:  Jordan, Eric/Erik, Penny, Brana, Aaron, Danny.

This. And I also won't use a name if I know someone by that name. This doesn't necessarily mean I don't like the name, I just won't give it to my child.

I totally agree with you about Brayden! I have two names that are like nails on a chalkboard to me every time I hear them, and that is one of them. It makes me think of a donkey's bray. Just changing the name by one letter to Brandon is soooo much better.

definitely dislike:

1. random spellings for no apparent reason

2. names picked just to be weird

3. names of students (or parents) that have annoyed me over the years

If it's in the top 75 more than likely I will not consider it.

Bad associations, or if I even know someone with that name -more than likely I would never consider it.

Bad name meanings.

Names that my MIL suggests because we have a totally different style.

If it sounds made up, bad spelling and top 100.  I like names that are unique but not crazy and unheard of.

Sorry this might be harsh for some:

I absolutely hate the name Dakota! Or any other name that could be used for a pet i.e. Riley, Tucker, Bailey, Sadie, Bella, Ella, Bentley,... etc. I work with a lot of dogs and every time I see names like these I think of some soccer mom and a golden- doodle. Also not a fan of Britney, Jessica, or Taylor.
