Need some STM help

Went to my regular checkup today, I am 39.4 weeks along and there has been no change from last week.  Still only 1cm dilated and 50% effaced.   Have any of you STMs been not very far along but still went into labor within the next few days?

The reason I ask is my due date is Friday and my family is flying in from Texas and they only have a week off work and today my OB offered a membrane sweep but I turned it down and now wonder if I should have done it.

Is there still a chance labor could start on its own pretty soon?

I went to a midwife, and they didn't do internal checks prior to labor. When I started having regular contractions, my midwife had me come in for a cervix check. I was greatly disappointed that I was only 1cm and barely effaced, so she said it could take a few days. Ultimately, I ended up going from 1cm to fully dilated in less than four hours.

Sadly, you just never know how slowly or quickly you could progress.

There's a chance it could start right now, or next week. Unfortunately no one will know. Sorry your family is flying out, but there's a chance they could miss it or only see you a very very short time. It would have been horribly difficult and painful for them to do a sweep at only 1 cm dilated. This is part of the reason a lot of people here say to not both with internal exams because they mean very little to most people. Good luck.

I was 2cm and 70% for atleast a month before the baby came.  Babies will come when they're good and ready...and they really don't care if family made a special trip or not.  (not trying to be snarky, but unless you induce there's no way to "make" a baby come)

There's no way to know. I was still only 1 cm at the hospital after my water broke at home at 41 weeks, so it can happen! They never told me anything about my effacement level.

I went a week overdue and only dilated .5 cm on my own (I was induced due to late-onset preeclampsia)

With my 3rd I was 1cm dilated at 36 weeks and my cervix was high. My doctor told me I probably had some time and would be fine when she was out of town... 3 days later I had my daughter.

Thanks ladies, I guess I just wanted to feel like I made an ok choice not to do the sweep today...very true you never know when the LO will come no matter what!

Its so hard being so far away from my family during this time, none of us knew what to do with booking flights because there is just no way to know.  I guess the worst that could happen is they get to spend some time with me in NYC, not too shabby!

I really wasn't dilated at all when I was in early labor and had gone in for an appointment. The reason many midwives (and maybe some docs, idk) don't do internals is because like you said, you just don't know. It gives you one snapshot of information, but as it can't really predict progress, it's not very useful.

From stories and experience it doesn't matter. When you body is not ready no medical interference will help. Membrane stripping won't kick start something that is not ready to happen.

My sister was induced 4 days after her due date being 2cm dilated and 20 hrs later she had to be rushed into a c-section with no progress.

I was induced 2 days before the due date and was 70% effaced and 2 cm dilated. I labored for only 10 hours and then 25 minutes of pushing.

She kept saying she felt like she wasn't ready.

Chance are labor will start within 2 weeks for you.  Where you're at as far as dilation/effacement doesn't mean much.  It could start tonight, it could start in 2 weeks.  The average FTM goes into labor at 41 weeks, 1 day if that helps at all.

dilation and effacement mean nothing when it comes to predicting labor.  I know women who have been four centimeters and have walked aorund for over a week that way.  With #1 and #2 I was only 1-2 cm the appointment before I went into labor.  And even when I was in serious labor and arrived at the hospital I was only a 3-4 and then went from 4-10 in no time at all.

So, you could wake up tomorrow 4 cm and still walk around for another week.  Or, you could go into labor tonight and arrive at the hospital only 2 cm and stay there for a while.

When I had my membranes swept with #2 (I was overdue), it did nothing but make me cramp and bleed.  Sex has always been the only thing to bring on labor, so I would try that before anything else.  Good luck!
