Anyone in Hawaii on base housing? If so how long was the wait?

We're ordered to go to Hawaii in June and getting the run around and very different answers from various people about when we can put our names on the list (both my husband and I).

Any information, points of contacts, etc. greatly appreciated.

We're not in base housing, but I'll try to answer your questions.

First, you won't really get your spot on the list until you get here and get checked in. They will adjust your spot according to when you detach from your current place.

The wait will really depend on what size house you need/qualify for, rank, and what happens to be empty when you get here. Everyone I know has had a completely different experience with housing - some got it right away, some had to wait. There wasn't a house available for us until about a month after we arrived. I was always frustrated when I tried to get information about housing.

You can also check on the other bases - I have a friend whose DH is Navy, but they live on Hickam. I met another Navy wife who waited about a month and got a house with the Marine housing.

We ended up renting in the community, and it worked out pretty well for us. We've been in two different houses and found both on AHRN.

That's awesome thank you!! I finallly found where they will put you on the waiting list when you detach from your Perm. duty station (which we already have) but are TDY to Jax for a few months then onto Kaneoe (sp.) but won't actually offer you housing until you arrive (makes total sense).

When renting out in town do you recommend some areas that are better than others? I have been looking but my head is spinning. We're waiting for 04 housing and are arriving in June 2013 so any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated!!

DH works near Schofield Barracks, so we live in that area - I haven't been out to Kaneohe much. I know a lot of people like to live in Kailua, and I've heard that the Marine housing out there is really nice.

There are some pretty areas near Honolulu, but I can't think of the names. My friend lives up on a hill above Honolulu, and they have gorgeous views. I knew people (not military) who lived in Hawaii Kai and loved their home, but I've only driven over there a few times. That side of the island (from K Bay and Kailua, all the way around the windward (east) coast is gorgeous. The only thing I don't know about living in those areas (Honolulu, Hawaii Kai) is how the drive is up to Kaneohe during rush hour. If we were going to be stationed over that way, Kailua would be the first place I'd look.

And just to throw this out there... If you LIKE city/urban life, there are lots of high rise condos in Waikiki/downtown Honolulu.

Random question: will you be bringing pets? If so, have you started getting everything done for them? You need about 4-6 months if you want to avoid quarantine. I think it's the bloodwork that is the longest part of the process. We successfully kept our cat out of quarantine the first time we arrived, but had to leave him for a few days when we came back because we couldn't get a pet-friendly hotel. (Those are really scarce.) Otherwise, we could have picked him up immediately that time, too.

Thanks Ladybug. Where is Schofield barracks?

I'll take your advice on our pets (little kitty and choc. lab).

I'm also going to look on AHN. I'll look into Kaliua, I just can't think we'll find anything affordable.

Yes he'll be driving to Kaneoe.(sp.)

Schofield is near the middle of the island. It takes about 30 minutes without traffic to get to Kaneohe from where we live Mililani. Gas is expensive, though, so you'd end up paying for gas instead of Kailua rent. I'm sure there are more affordable areas over there, but I'm just not that familiar with it.

I'm on my phone, so can't see my previous posts. Did I suggest checking with all branches for housing? I know there is a lot of military housing off the H201 freeway. Army has Aliamanu Military Reservation, Navy has Red Hill, and I think there is Marine housing, too. I don't think that would be a bad drive, but I don't know anything about that housing except where it is.

Good luck! It took me awhile to love Hawaii, and now I'm sad we are leaving soon. Housing is frustrating here.

My husband is stationed at Schofield; we just got here in June. It was REALLY hard for us to get info before we got to HI - we basically landed, checked in at the desk at the airport, THEN started to figure things out. It's tough!

If you are going to be in Kaneohe, I recommend looking in that area (lots of military-friendly housing) or in Kailua. Traffic is always a problem on the island so I recommend staying close to base if you can.  But when you get here, they will start to tell you everything you need to know. You will probably be put up in a hotel on base or given options of hotels in Waikiki to stay while you in-doc.

Good luck! Feel free to ask more questions - I haven't been here long, but my family is from here so I can usually get good insider answers!

Ladybug and Shimarock Thank you. All information is great. We're going to try for base housing at Kaneoe (sp.). If not we'll try Kailua.

Can I ask if either of you work. If so how hard was it to find work in your field. If you don't work god bless you because I may be headed in that direction since we've had our first child and will probably go for #2 while in Hawaii.

any recommendations on Peditricians or OB GYN?

Thank you sooo much.. Ladybug I'm sorry you're leaving. Shimarock we're a year behind you.

Thanks,

L-

I do work - I'm a physical therapist so it wasnt too hard to find a job for me; its a big field right now and I got really lucky to work where I wanted. From what I've heard, its really hit or miss on finding a job out here. Economy isnt great, but most people who I know have moved out here and been able to find something.

For OB, I'm seeing Joan (midwife) at Dr Battacharya's office at Castle Medical Center - its in Kailua so should be close to you!  I dont know anything about pediatricians yet though, sorry! I should probably work on that. :)

Good luck!!! I know its so stressful. But when you get here, you will be in Hawaii! And you get to lie around on the beach all day! (not really, but you can tell everyone that).
