When did you stop??

Hi ladies! I am a newbie to the 2nd tri and so excited "we" made it safely!!

My question is when did you stop drinking coffee? I feel like I cant wake up without it in the morning but I know I will have to stop soon....

Thanks!

I didn't. I have a cup a day. And I don't plan to.

ETA: You're asking this now? As you enter the second tri? I find that strange. If anything, I've heard of giving it up in first tri then going back to a cup a day thereafter. Why do you think you have to stop soon? Curious.

I didn't and I'm not going to.  I still have at least a cup a day.

See that is because I have never heard of this before. I heard the 2nd is the most crucial when it comes to food and beverage choice. And I say I "heard".

Curious too.

Anyways, you don't have to stop, you just need to have a safe limit. I stick with one cup a day. Sometimes a cup of coffee and small soda.

It's fine to have your cup in the morning , a reasonable size cup, throughout your pregnancy.

And just FYI, the only time someone may recommend not drinking caffeine is during the first tri.

I have yet to stop drinking it and don't plan to stop. It's fine to drink it, just don't go crazy with the caffeine.

I didn't stop either, I just limited. Ironically, I wasn't much of a coffee drinker before I got pregnant. The second trimester brought with it some killer headaches though, and a little bit of caffeine along with lots & lots of water was the only thing that seemed to help me.

This is so bizarre. You might want to check where you're getting your information. Like PP said, most people won't drink it in first tri, but will start drinking it later. Most sources will say it's safe drink drink caffeine throughout pregnancy, in moderate amounts.

I haven't cut it out either and wont stop myself from having a cup when I itch for it.  They say staying under 200 mg of caffine a day is totally fine.  If you need your coffee, have your morning cup and be sure to cut out the soda and chocolates the rest of the day.  A little coffee is totally fine, just don't over do it.

Here are a few articles about studies proving limited caffine is okay:

NEVER!!!! I could never ever give it up. I tried once..... lasted til about noon, had a horrible headache that Tylenol would not touch, had a cup of coffee and lived in bliss the rest of the day. I don't drink the 2 pots of coffee a day that I use to but I can not give it up completely. Besides everyone is better off if mommy  has her coffee in the morning!!

Add me to the list of coffee drinkers. Couldn't live without it. All in moderation.

i stopped when i found out - not worth it to me - i get decaf sometimes now, and I don't drink soda or tea with caffeine anyways, so that was pretty easy to stay away from

I still drink coffee probably 2-3x/week.. The only thing I've changed is that I don't drink coffee after noon-ish, because if I drink it in the afternoon/evening I find it impossible to sleep!

I started drinking a cup a day with this one. I have an eight month old, and a 4 year old I stay home with. In addition I have a nine year old, that I do homework with every single night. To top it off, I have been studying for an exam that I will need to take soon. If I don't have the one cup, I will crack. lol

I didn't stop, and I won't be. As long as it's a reasonable amount, it's fine. But yes, if anything, you give it up in the first tri, not after.

I did not with my first pregnancy or this one. I am glad because with DD she had zero caffeine sensitivity and I attribute that in part at least to drinking it throughout my pregnancy.

You can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day throughout pregnancy. But if you were going to stay away from caffeine entirely, it would've been in the first trimester.

I'm pretty sure 2nd trimester is the "safest" one. Your baby is done doing all of the critical growth, like its brain and neurological system, after the 1st trimester, and there are medications and things you want to avoid in the 3rd trimester because they can cause complications during birth. You might want to get a good prenatal book at the library or something.

I still drink 1/2 a cup of coffee a day and have the whole time!

Never.

Well, when baby is born I limit it more just because the caffeine does go into your milk. Since I had two newborns who didn't like to sleep, I didn't want to add any stimulants to keep them up. I probably had one small cup of regular coffee as opposed to my usual 12oz cup.

When I found out I was pregnant. I cut out all caffeinated beverages cold turkey, and never went through withdrawal. Ive not had any need to go back.

I agree with PPs, pick up a copy of What to Expect so you can know what you need to avoid for real.

I haven't had regular coffee since trying to conceive DD#1, and since I BF her, I still avoided caffeine in general (but would have an occasional cup, usually decaf.)  I haven't had any coffee in this pregnancy but will sometimes indulge in an iced tea (made with decaf if I can).

You don't have to stop. They say to limit your intake of caffeine, but I've never heard to stop. Some ladies choose to give it up, but it's definitely not necessary. I have two drinks that are caffeneited a day, and I did with my last pregnancy too. It helped with headaches. I say don't stop, but you can always talk to your doctor.

I actually spoke with someone who was late in her third trimester who said she was drinking coffee until she could really start to feel the baby move... and then noticed a correlation between her caffeine intake and the movement, so she cut it out later in her pregnancy.

OP, I've been trying to cut back on caffeine a little bit in case I feel like I have to stop when breastfeeding due to sensitivity (and not wanting to face a quitting cold-turkey situation). But for now, I still enjoy a cup a lot of days.

With both pregnancies I developed a huge coffee aversion so I had no cravings for it.  This time, I've been drinking decaf coffee drinks from Starbucks over the past month or so but still very rarely enjoy the taste of plain coffee. The thought of brewing it at home makes me sick to my stomach - it is really weird.

I limited myself to a cup of coffee a few times a week in the first trimester. Now I have a cup every day. My MW is fine with this and all research shows that there is no harm at all in one cup a day.
