How often do you change a newborn's diaper?

We've been changing LO after every feeding but noticed he is starting to get diaper rash. I don't think it's possible to change him every single time he goes??

Do you use a bum balm to protect your LO's skin every time you change him/her? Or perhaps it's a reaction to the diaper chemicals?

We were using vaseline - the nurses suggested using it to keep the poop from sticking to his bottom. After a few days it didn't seem like it was working so we switched to Desitan now at every diaper change. The rash has definitely gotten smaller but there's one little area that is still so red.

We had the same exact issue.

First we stopped using baby wipes and started using warm water and wash cloths/paper towels. Then we realized he was allergic to Pampers Swaddlers and switched to Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers. As soon as we changed diapers the rash went away in about 2 days.

We are using wipes again, but the sensitive kind as well. We also still use Desitin just in case.

DD is allergic to huggies and also is very sensitive to wetness.  We first tried desitin and then switched diaper brands.  We were CD at first, but she can't handle cotton or fleece so we had to try something else.

We had the same issue until we switched to fragrance free wipes. Also use Aquafor at each diaper change. Haven't had a rash since.

My daughter had a horrible rash at about a week old. My pedi had me try their triple threat which consists of a layer of lotrimin, then a butt paste of some sort, then vaseline. By day 2 the rash was almost gone. Since then Ive been using Aquaphor for babies every diaper change and we havent had a rash problem again.

I've heard you should change newborns every 1-3 hours, that thy can be very sensitive to sitting in urine.  My baby is only 2 days old, but so far I've failed to change him that often all the time.  Somehow hours fly by!  New babies really keep you busy!

You change a newborn's diaper as often as they go pee or poop.  or as close as possible.  sitting in poop or pee will burn their skin and cause a rash.  it hurts too.

I would expect to change baby when they wake up, most will go pee at least then.

when they eat, especially when nursing after a bit they may go poop, so you could try waiting for that to change to cut down on the diapers that only last 15 minutes.

but at first, expect to go thru at least 12 diapers a day if feeding is going well, and things are moving along as they should.

We used a beeswax based balm for the first few weeks. Our DS gets thrush on his butt often, so now we use a combination of a thrush cream and an antiseptic lotion and that works great.

We change him every 3-4 hours. Unless we hear him poop.

This. At least 12 diapers a day. No wipes. Just use baby washcloths that you wet w/ warm water. It is pretty rare to need to use any kind of cream on a newborn - my guess is a reaction to the diapers or the wipes or not getting changed enough.

Ella had a reaction to wipes, even though we were using the fragrance free.  She also had a reaction to Luvs diapers.  DH is allergic to aloe, so we have tried to avoid products that contain aloe, which is difficult.  We are using paper towels/wash clothes and water to wipe her.  We have found that Huggies diapers are best for her.  Since we switched to Huggies and stopped using wipes we have not had a diaper rash.

I always change him before his feeding so I dont wake him if he falls asleep after taking his bottle. Now that he is 3 weeks I change him a little more often than that since he is going 3-4 hours between feedings. I use balmex on his bum to prevent diaper rash. I tried desitin and A&D but both of those started to give him rashes. The balmex is thick and pasty but it is great! Hasn't had a speck of red since.
