Don't know gender - Aurora vs. Sydney, Layne vs. Julian

We are going to let our baby's gender be a surprise but we're having a tough time with baby names. We haven't had an "A-HA!" moment with any name yet, but after seeing many of the traditional and crazy baby names out there, we keep going back to Aurora or Sydney for a girl and Layne or Julian for a boy.  We are looking for something different that's still a name you see occasionally.  We aren't telling anyone we know, so maybe this will help.  Any other ideas along the same vein are welcome.  Thank you!

Aurora Catherine (girl) - Nickname Rory

Sydney <middle?> (girl) - Nickname Syd

Layne William (boy)

Julian <middle?> (boy)

Aurora for the girl 

I like both boy names but ONLY if spelled Lane. Layne looks so feminine. I think I slightly like Lane more. It used to be one of my favorites.

I like Sydney and Julian best. They are all good though. :) I am no help with building names, so the other ladies will have to help with that.

I prefer Sydney to Aurora, and like Julian and Layne equally. I also like Catherine as a mn for Sydney.

I really like Sydney for a girl, Layne and Julian are both super cute but I think I like Julian a little more.

I love Julian, and I like Sydney a lot.  I don't dislike Aurora.  I only like Lane if you spell it without the Y.

I think Aurora Catherine sounds nice and I like the NN Rory.

If it's a boy, please use the spelling Lane. I like Julian better though.

I'm not a huge fan of Aurora but I hate Sydney on a girl so Aurora still gets my vote.  It sounds nice with Catherine.

I like Julian a lot.  My cousin's DS is Julian Oscar and I think that makes a nice combo.

I don't like either of your girl names.  I find Aurora difficult to say, and there is nothing attractive at all about Sydney, IMO.  If I was forced to pick one, it would be Aurora.

I love both your boy names, but I agree with PP - drop the "y" in Layne.  It looks very feminine.

Aurora and Julian, hands down.

PPs have some good suggestions for MNs, but if you want to stick with your top names here, I think Julian Lane or Julian William would work just fine.

I would assume Layne was a girl but I really like Julian.

I don't really like Aurora or Sydney - just NMS - but I prefer Sydney.

The spelling of Layne is meaningful to us, so we wouldn't use it at all if it didn't have the "Y".  I'm surprised so many people hate it, but it's nice that you generally like the others!  In any case, thanks so much for your responses!

Aurora by a landslide. I've never liked Sydney.

Layne over Julian. But, I much prefer the spelling Lane.
