Charlie Horses

I've been getting them so much lately. THis morning, I stretched in bed, and got another one.  I've been eating bananas, because I heard the Potassium helps, but oy, I'm dying with them.

Now, my calf is so sore.  If its not one thing, its another.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, in both of my legs! the cramps came for like 2-3 nights, and the soreness lasted just as long.

Last night I got one in the middle of my sleep at random.

I read that you can get it from being on your feet too long, and since my job requires that, i just assumed that's what it was from.

This has been happening to me FOR WEEKS!!!! It's horrible. I had other symptoms of low potassium, so I had my levels checked and they were low. So I got put on a special diet and it has worked wonders.

Lots more water...like a lot more.

3 cups of plain yogurt a day (plain yogurt has a higher po count than others, idky)

4 bananas a day

Baked Potatoe, with the skin (I do this 4x a week)

2 glasses of OJ a day.

Daily stretching.

Good Luck, and I hope it gets better.

I got them almost every night in my sleep last pregnancy. It really helped me to stretch my calves for a good 30-45 seconds each before bed. I stand against a wall with the sole of one foot flat against the wall, toes pointed up, and lean into the wall until i feel a stretch, if that makes any sense.

Try to drink lots of water too.  I was getting them really bad multiple times a day and since I have up'd my water intake I haven't had another.  Also, when you stretch don't point your toes, flex them upwards instead (if that makes sense).  If I stretch while pointing my toes I am guaranteed to get one.

I eat a banana every day and have for years and I still get them pretty much every night.  A few weeks ago I got one in my thigh.  That was fun.

My doctor said to up calcium and I haven't had one since.  She recommended a couple Viactiv a day because the baby steals calcium from you.  Good luck, they suck!

When you feel one starting, flex your foot to be perpendicular to your leg. It stops it from happening immediately for me. There really is nothing you can change in your diet, trust me I tried.

I have been eating banana chips (dehydrated bananas ) like they are going out of style. I'm still gaggy and occasionally throw up and the texture of bananas don't settle well, but I can eat the chips no problem. Plus, the potassium is concentrated in the chips, so the total volume needed is less.

FYI- i have been buying in bulk from fresh market and they are much more reasonable than the trail mix variety.

Keep your potassium levels up (eat BANANAS) and take your PNV.

Also, if you feel one coming on FLEX your foot really quickly and it often stops it. I have been shocked at how drastically this has helped.

Yes!  I find that if I stand up really quick, it disappears.

I have found that taking b6 has really helped. I started taking it for another issue, but haven`t had a cramp since!

If you can sense it coming, and sense your leg starting to cramp up, flex your foot like crazy and bend your leg.

If you catch it in time, this will stop it immediately and it'll go away and leave you alone without turning into a real charlie horse.

Oh I've been getting them a ton too! The only thing that's been working for me is to stand up and immediately put weight on the leg, it's awful painful but it works. Or massage the area, which hurts too. The other night I had one so bad I was whimpering in bed, then as soon as it started to let up, I got a shin area cramp on the other leg! Only thing that helped was standing up.

My right calf was so sore all day today from the same thing!  I had brutally painful ones lastnight.  Just awful!
