Pains around tailbone?

Hi ladies,

I started getting sharp pains (mostly when standing up or after leaning over) right around my tailbone area at about 12 weeks or so, then they went away for a while. I asked my doctor about it and she didn't seem very concerned or that she knew what caused it. Now the pains have started up again over the past few weeks and are worse. They occur often when I stand, after bending over, or walking.

Does anyone else experience this or know how to alleviate it? Any stretches or exercises that can help maybe? I really hope it doesn't just get worse as I get farther along. It really hurts sometimes!

Does it feel like a charlie horse?  When I get these, it usually means I'm gassy. :)

how far does the pain reach? is it right in the tailbone?

I had a cyst in that area - twice - the first time antibiotics healed it, the 2nd time I needed emergency surgery. It hasn't come back since.

Mrs. Adam - It does not feel like a charlie horse and is definitely not related to gas.

RussionMom - I wouldn't say it is in my tailbone, just right directly around it. I assume your cyst was not related to pregnancy? I think that whatever is causing this is from the pregnancy, seeing as I have never experienced this before and I am guessing it might be due to the inside pressure on my tailbone.

I have an appointment at my OB office Friday, so I plan on asking again about it.

I had this around 16 weeks and was told by my OB that the added weight of the baby can bruise your tailbone, but it's nothing to worry about. She suggested doing pelvic exercises to try and move the baby around and alleviate some of that pressure.

Is it nerve pain? In all three of my pregnancies I have had sharp, almost numbing, lower back pain. Sometimes it goes down my leg (like sciatica) and sometimes it's just localized. It occurs in the situations you mention — when I stand, am bending, or even if I'm sitting a certain way. For me, it does not go away until I deliver.

Yes, my tailbone hurts like heck, but it's usually after I sit in the car for too long, (which is a bummer because we travel a lot every month) and when I lay reclined on my back for any amount of time. It's so annoying! I don't know how to relieve it, except to move around more frequently and take extra stops to stretch when we're driving.

It's probably from sitting too long

If it's the tailbone area, I'd get in to see the doc just in case. I had the same symptoms and ignored it, thinking it was just sitting in a crappy chair while pregnant that was causing me pain.  Like RussionMom, I had a cyst.  By the time I gave in and got it checked, it was huge and had to be lanced.  Which was more painful than giving birth.  The cysts are not actually related to pregnancy but I'm not the only one I know who had them appear for the first time during pregnancy.  There are usually sinuses there and the cysts form when those sinuses get hair or dirt trapped in them and get infected, which is easier during pregnancy since you're not as flexible as normal and it's easy to miss little thing here and there when you're cleaning up.  It came back when DS was a year old and I had to have it surgically removed.

Go to a chiropractor!!

I have gone to a chiropractor religiously since I was 12 years old (I have severe back issues), but I swear by her now that I'm expecting. It is most likely strain from the muscles and tendons that are stretching to accomodate your growing uterus (yes, this is a direct quote from my chiro b/c I was experiencing the same thing!).

Also, a suggestion from my chiro, was to massage your round ligaments for about 60 seconds every morning before getting out of bed. You round ligaments are right at the top of those v muscles on your stomach (the obliques)... if you point to your belly button and trace down towards your hip bone, you'll feel the tightness there. I do this every morning and my chiro does a deeper massage weekly... and although I still do get minute tailbone pain, mostly only after I've been sitting for too long, I am sure it's not as bad as it would be if I wasn't doing these things!

Good luck!
