I came off BCP in August as well, and in October had a whole raft of mind-messing phantom symptoms, I think coming off BC can be a real biatch that way!
I'm a horrible sleeper too but still temp, my day-to-day temps are pretty spiky but I still saw a pretty clear temp spike and sustained higher temps after O last cycle, my first one charting. I had a doctor's appointment last week and showed him my chart, and he was fairly impressed with how clear my temp shift showed. I often end up temping an hour or more earlier than my 'normal' time because that's just when I wake up and can't get back to sleep, or temp later because I've been up until an hour before my temp time then sleep through it til later, but it still seems to work for me. So, I think you should consider at least giving it a try, chances are you'll get something out of it.
