Here's a stupid question for you ...

I keep reading posts that say clomid use is either monitored or unmonitored. What is the difference? I'm just curious what goes along with both bc I was given clomid and told to take it day three of my cycle and if i do not get a BFP then to call the clinic back. Reading posts like the ones below (getting a new doctor if told to use unmonitored) worry me. TIA

A doctor should be monitoring you on Clomid.  Mostly via U/S.  Clomid can thin your uterine lining and it can also cause you to release more than one egg.  I hate it when doctors hand this drug out like candy, as if it's the immediate cure.

Monitored cycles include baseline (CD3 bloodwork & ultrasound), mid cycle bloodwork and ultrasound and 7DPO bloodwork.

Clomid causes many side effects, and if you are not properly monitored you wouldn't know. It can thin your lining or cause cysts, and w/o an unltrasound you wouldn't know.

Also, if you haven't had the proper diagnostic testing first (HSG & SA) you could be wasting your time because Clomid has a limit on how many times you can take it, so if you take Clomid for 3 cycles then have an HSG to find out your tubes are blocked you just wasted 3 medicated cycles.

Sounds like you are working w/ an Gyno, I wouldn't recommend doing any medicated cycles w/ a Gyno. If you have been trying for a year if you are under 35 I would seek the help of an RE.

Me Dx: Weak Ovulation / Total Thyroid Removal
DH Dx: Mild MFI (borderline all 3), Varicocele

Surprise BFP on 1/20/13 EDD: 9/25/13 It's A Girl!!

Well, i wouldnt say it was offered to me like candy. We have been TTC for awhile and after testing we were told 2% chance of naturally conceiving, 4% with clomid and 9% with clomid and iui.

How often are these u/s "supposed" to take place? I have an appt with my doctor and I would like to bring up questions to ask.

We have completed HSG & SA and this is the guidance we have been given from REI. I am becoming concerned though since reading your responses.

Oh, an RE wants to do an unmonitored Clomid cycle? Yes, get a new doctor, or at least talk w/ them and ask them about monitoring. When I hear about unmonitored cycles I assume it would be a Gyno since RE's should know better.

whoa! thank you for posting these links. I have a follow up appt with REI on the 17th and I definitely will be bringing up my concerns if they suggest unmonitored.

Thank you. All of this information is helping me make better educated decisions on my health and the ttc process. I will be bringing my concerns up in my follow up appt.
