Would you induce?

Well nothing is happening, I'm a STM, so I thought I would have gone into labor since my son was 2 weeks early. Just went to dtr and she was flrxible on induction, but said she would do it if it was her because she is concerned the baby is 8.5 maybe bigger. I would go in night before with cervadil and he said sometimes that's enough w a STM, so not even get to pitocin. Wwyd? My water broke w son, but I had to be induced w pit and it was horrible. I'm kind of torn, help!

I'm being induced the same way you describe and my DR also said may times pit is not needed. I've had hard labors with pitocin for my older two and as you know it's not fun. If I were you, I would doit. Good luck.

I would give yourself more time. Your not technically overdue yet and going into an induction does raise the risk of C/S. Give yourself some more time. Maybe she just need a few more days or even another week.

I would not. Give it some more time....unless I am 2+ weeks beyond my due date or there is a medical emergency of some sort, I would not induce.

Curious or those of you not willing to induce, why, and would a big baby make you open to it?

Nope. Just because the doc says the baby may be big wouldn't change a darn thing for me. More than likely they are wrong on the weight guess. Also, I've seen plenty of women give birth vaginally to 9+ lb babies.

I hear inducing is quite painful and more times than not ends in a C-section anyway.  Not something I want to do "early".  I will induce at a week late, but not any sooner then that - unless of course there is a medical reason for it.  I am not sure a big baby is a medical reason, unless caused by GD.

I would wait until at least 41 weeks to get the induction...that's what I am doing. Dr already said that I am having a big baby but that is not factoring into my decision and my dr did not seem to think I should be induced any earlier bc of it. I would prefer to come naturally if at all possible. I definitely would side eye a doc for proposing an induction just bc the baby "might be" big.

Yes, my main reason is the amount of c-sections and other interventions that often come from inducing. Also there is REALLY no way to tell if the baby is big or not. They thought my cousin's baby was going to be 9lbs and she was like 7 something, so in my opinion it's just not a reason to take the risk. The baby will come when she/your body is ready for her to come.

Your chances of having a c-section increase when you have to be induced. That's the main reason why most people keep waiting and hoping to hold out. My sister in law went in (2 weeks ago) to be induced at 13 days past her due date, the gel they used started contractions within an hour and she didn't need pictocin. I would hope for this if you have to be. I was induced at 37 weeks for preeclampsia and the contractions were so bad within 2 hours I wanted relief. I ended up with a c-section after 24 hours of labor. I would never just choose to do that again, not that I had the choice. But everyone experience is different and in the end it comes down to what's best for you and the baby, and what your doctor thinks is best.

No, I would definitely not induce if I were in your situation.

If you're thinking about doing it I would research the risks of induction and consider whether you want to increase your risks when you're not facing any medical necessity.  Also, seriously consider your Bishop's score.

The average STM will go into labor at 40 weeks, 3 days.  You're coming up on that quickly.  However, normal human gestation goes to 42 weeks.  I really wouldn't mess with the process unless you have to.

I would not induce because it increases risks across the board for both mother and baby.  The baby is going to come out on its own when it is ready so why not wait for that?  Seems silly to mess with a natural process (barring medical complications of course) to save a few days or a week or so.  There's a reason that labor starts when it does.

And no, a big baby would not change my mind unless there were additional medical complications to consider.  Not only do they truly not know the size of the baby (it's just a guesstimate that can be off by several pounds), they definitely have no idea what your body is capable of safely birthing.  Barring other medical complications it's rare for your body to grow a baby too large for you to safely birth.  I would rather trust my body and the natural process of birth than accept unnecessary risks for me and my baby.

ETA:  Also, keep in mind ACOG recommends against inducing based on baby's suspected size.  If a doctor is encouraging it, they're going against evidence based practices.

I really would do some research on this topic so you can come to your own conclusions though.  It's not as simple as picking out baby's birthday.  If it was we'd all just induce at 39 or 40 weeks and be done with it.

Your OB's reasoning of the baby being 8.5 lbs. is not very good IMO.  2 out of 3 of my kids so far have weighed more than that at birth and I would not say one birth was more difficult than the other.  One was a 10 lber and even that wasn't bad.  Your body is constructed to deliver a baby 8.5 lbs I am sure.  Besides, the added weight on a baby at this point is fat and fat is squish and easy to deliver :)

That being said, I was induced with baby#3 because of high bp and the induction was easy.  If I hadn't had a medical reason though, I would have waited to let my body do it on it's own.

I would never induce due to size unless we were talking about 13 pounds or something ridiculous. My grandma had 3 kids, two 7 to 8 lbs and one a 9 pounder and said the 9 pounder was easiest to deliver and care for and was the most content baby out of the three. Not scientific facts by any means but bigger doesn't necessarily mean harder to deliver. Also what PP said, there is no way to know exact size. I would try to wait it out to cut down on the risk of a c section. Good luck.

Especially about the ACOG part, it's amazing to me how many doctors totally disregard their recommendations.

I delivered both my girls at 41 weeks 2 days after being induced both times.

41 weeks for DD 1

41 weeks 1 day for DD2

I will gladly induce this time again or else I could be 42 + weeks on my own. My medical problems are starting to get to me and if they continue I will need to get on with it.  I can't feel my hands half the day and wake up all night in pain. I would wait if you aren't having any issues, but if you are favorable and your doctor is willing at the 41 week mark I'd start talking. BTW, I had 2 vaginal deliveries....1st induction took 3 days 2nd 1 day.

I wouldn't induce. I delivered a 10lb baby vaginally and DS birth was not nearly as traumatic as some birth stories I've heard about smaller babies. I just don't think size is a valid reason for induction.

With DS, they though he was 9 lbs at 40 weeks. I went naturally at 40 and 5 days and he was only 6 lb 15 oz. What was your first babys weight? I would give it a few days, if you can. GL!

My Dr. wants to induce on my due date if no labor by that time.  Similar to you, I would go in the night before w carvadil and go from there.  I am also scared because w my first my water broke and no labor happened so I was given pitocin...and it was awful.  And I was medically induced w my second w pitocin...and it was awful!  That being said this time I am for sure having an epidural and hoping it makes all the difference!

This and inducing just paves the way for more (possibly) unnecessary interventions and increases chances of C/S . No thanks. I'm planning on going natural so inducing scares the crap out of me. I'm a big fan of letting nature take its course until I get to 42 weeks. Then I'll have an actual medical reason for inducing but I pray it will not come to that.  Happy due date!  And give it a least a week more!  No one was every pregnant forever.

I'll be waiting until 10 days after my due date as long as everything looks good before inducing even if the estimated she was 8.5 pounds. Those estimates aren't all that precise so I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor.

First, the doctor has no idea what the size of a baby is before it is born. Doctors routinely say "big baby" but the reality is that the estimation of the baby's size is done through a very unreliable means, u/s, and their weight can be 2lbs either side of that. For example, my doc estimated my DD at 7lbs, she was only 5lbs.

Secondly, when induction is not medically necessary (ie. low/high amniotic fluid, heart problems with LO, pre-eclampsia)  you are upping your chance of your child not being ready for labor, and thus creating a "failure to progress" situation that "requires" an emergency c-section. That is totally avoidable.

Babies come when they are ready.

Check your Bishop's score. If it's low, induction won't work and you'll end up with a long, painful labor ending in C-section.

If it's high, you could induce, but only because of the size of the baby. I would probably wait until 41 weeks myself.

I sent you the induction doc I received in my birthing class (sent in PM due to size).  There are definitely risks to you and baby.  My instructor advised waiting out to 42 weeks before trying any method of being induced.
