So how popular is Megan, anyway?

If we ever have a girl, her name will be Mary Margaret. At the moment, we're really liking the sound of Megan for short. Megan is in the mid 100's, SS-wise, which we're fine with as a principle. However, it was very popular--think top twenty--around 1985-2000. Do you think this dates it at all?

How many Megans do you know? We've personally met two, ages ten and sixteen, and a three-year-old named Meaghan, which is definitely not the spelling we'd use.

Also, do you like the name in general?

NMS. I was born in 1986, so all of the girls in school with me were either named Megan, Lauren, or Rachel. I have sooo many friends named Megan that it seems so played out to me.

I couldn't even begin to count the number of Megans that I know. It was so popular in the 90s! I do think that it's becoming less popular tho.

The name is NMS, but it's still a great name. :)

I know one Megan (my niece), and she's 20. I think it's an okay name.

I know a few Megan's (the youngest in her 20s) and its my sister's middle name. It is very 80s/90s in my opinion.

I think it was very popular to name your child that in the 80's maybe 90's so there are a lot of 20 something Megans but I don't hear of new babies being named that right now.

Yes, I think the extreme spike in popularity in the 80's and 90's does date the name.  As the others have said, it's a name that brings me back to my childhood.  It's a beautiful name, but definitely dated!

I think it's a great name. It was popular in the 80's and 90's but I don't think when she is older that there will be that many around her age.

I'm confused, the full FN will be Mary Margaret and the nn will be Megan? Megan is a name of its own why not just call her Megan if you like that name? JUst not sure how you get Megan from Mary Margaret...

My name is Meghan. I am 29. Growing up there were always 2-3 other Megan/Meghans in my grade. So I tend to agree that it may be an 80s name, but of course, a good one! :)

My dd is 6 months old and we named her Megan. I obviously like the name. I am an 80's kid and never knew one Megan growing up...so I think its after my time. I only know one other Megan, who is 26. I have not met any other children with the name. I don't see it as dated like some pp stated.

I am 28 and my sister (Megan) is 22. I know a couple Megans (Meghan, Meaghan) my age. I would say above average but nothing crazy. However, my sister had many other Megans around all the time. She was born in 1990, and I think it may have been at its peak then! I am a preschool teacher and have never taught a Megan in the past 6 years, but DH does have 2 cousins named Megan (4 years old and infant).

Edit: I just want to add that I love the name Megan! I would still use it... although I am confused how you get Megan from Mary Margaret? I know a couple Mary Margarets and they are all Mary Margaret, Mary, or MM.

I'm Meagan. And I'm 28 yrs old. I think it is a great name, but I'm biased. Lol. I don't think it is very popular anymore and rarely hear it on young children. I know at least 10 Megan/Meghan/meaghan/ but they are all my age :)

I also wonder why you don't just name your daughter Megan if that is what you intend to call her...

I don't think the name is dated. I know several Megans, but none under age 20.

Everything comes back around. I am a Megan and was born in 79 in every class my entire school career there were upwards of 5-7 Megan's in every class. Currently there are 3 in my office with the name Megan (different spellings) and as far a my kids (who are in Jr High) I probably have only seen it 3 or four times. but those supper popular names always come back around.

Another Megan here, born in 76. Grew up with two my age and know a couple in their early 20s and a couple in grade school. I would say it is less dated than Michelle, Jennifer or Jessica. If I heard one of those on a baby I would think it was weird.
For those who asked, Megan's is anl pet name for Margaret.

Seriously?

I have heard Mag/Meg, Maggie, Marg, Marge, Margie, Peggy, Peg... never Megan. I could never imagine having Mary Margaret as my "real" name and having another formal name as my nn. Must be a regional pet name.

I would call her Mary Margaret or Mary.  If you want to call her Megan, I would name her that.  I was born in 1981, so I know a lot of Megan's.  It's very 1980's to me, but I do like it.  I love Mary Margaret though!! :)

Megan seems an odd "for short" name for Margaret, considering it's its own name with an entirely unrelated meaning. Anyway, I know 8 Megans, including my sister, but the youngest is 24.

ETA: I stand corrected. Megan is a Welsh diminutive of Margaret. I'd always know that my sister's name meant Pearl and was Welsh, but honestly didn't know the Margaret connection

I know lots of Megans my age (late 20s) but none that are young.

I totally can see Megan as a nn for Margaret, it's legit.  But I think Meg would be better.  Margaret is 2 syllables so if you want something shorter then I'd go for Meg.  If you think Margaret is too old fashioned then I'm not sure Megan is much better because it does have a dated air to it.

I love the name Megan but DH vetoed it. I prefer Megan to Margaret. I think Megan is a classic name. It reminds me of Karen- a name that was popular in the 50s but is continuously used, unlike Barbara or Linda. I don't think Megan will be dated because I know a lot of Irish couples continue to use Megan, Meghan, Meegan etc.

I understand your concern- I was worried about the name Amanda being dated but as someone pointed out it's not Tiffany or Amber. I think Megan is an even safer choice than Amanda because it is being used more so peopke won't think it's a "mom" name.
