Breasts not producing enough milk??

My baby is 4 weeks old tomorrow and for the past 3 nights she has not been sleeping. She might sleep for 10-20 minutes but then wakes up andput. cries. I am currently 100% breast feeding. So everytime she crys/wakes up she tries to nurse, but only does for a couple of minutes and quits. Since this whole being up all night thing has started, I have noticed my breasts never feeling full, they feel saggy and flat. I am wondering if I am not producing enough milk?? I have made a doctors appointment but am considering supplementing with formula tonight to see if it makes a difference?

  • Thank you for your input.

Soft breasts and frequent feedings are not a sign of low supply. Your baby is probably having a growth spurt and isis cluster feeding.

That happened to met too - I'm sure by now you have heard of supply and demand - you just have to keep at it. Pump for 5 minutes longer than you currently do and do it more often. It may take some time before your body starts to put out more but keep at it and it will happen. Don't be discouraged.

I found early on I was not getting a productive latch for my baby. When she gets a latch where there is some of the areola as well as the nipple it helped a lot more. She was able to get more milk when she nursed. I also found my baby starts to pop on and off the breast when she has to burp or when she is done.

I would agree with others, your baby may also be on a growth spurt as well. This is her way of telling your body to produce more milk.

It gets better. I am at 9 weeks, and initially I thought I had low milk supply. I was supplementing with formula after trying to breastfeed and she was still fussy. Now, I can exclusively breastfeed, or supplement with formula if I am out visiting. I just am sure to pump when I get back to continue to keep up my milk supply.

Good luck! Hugs!

I was having the same. Just keep pumping like pp said. Skin to skin also helps trigger more let down. I pump more when my son is near me.

Have you searched this on Kelly mom? Her info made me feel a lot better and more confident.

Some babies feed more often than others. My guess is it's probably a growth spurt and she will start feeding less in a few days.

As your supply regulates you wont get that full feeling all the time, which is what will be happening with you at the moment.

And remember, your baby gets more out than a pump ever could, so don't look at the amount you pump as an indicator of how much milk your LO is getting.

If you're worried about supply, pump after every feed, don't limit feedings or feeding lengths, take fenugreek, drink mothers milk tea etc.

Try weighing LO before and after a feeding to try and gauge how much she's really getting!

pumping is not an indicator of your supply...it could be bc there is a problem w your pump but more likely it is bc during a growth spurt with the cluster feeding pumping output tends to be less.  Watch diapers - does your LO have enough pee and poop diapers? If so, then you are fine.  If not the make an appointment with a LC.

Sounds like classic growth spurt. If you supplement you will not trigger your body to make more milk, because you are not allowing your baby to suck on the breast. Your best bet is to put LO to breast as much as they need and you will notice more milk production in one or two days. (Usually my breasts are extremely full two days after the growth spurt starts). Don't worry you will get through it, but I know it's difficult and quite demanding!

Oh and I never pump during a growth spurt because my supply is already being depleted by having to make the extra milk for the spurt. If you don't have to...don't.

I wouldn't worry you're probably doing just fine : I went through the same thing as a new mom my Lamaze instructor who is also certified in breadtfeeding education which many are told me that you wont always get engorged. Your breasts will "learn" so to speak. If you're really concerned I would contact a real Lamaze instructor a lot of them out there don't teach real Lamaze they should be cappa or Dona certified..I think those are the right acronyms for information on either breastfeeding if they're able or a reliable lactation consultant

O also! Don't worry about how much you pump its not an accurate indication of your production
