Membrane sweep with no forewarning?

I went to my dr yesterday for my 40 wk internal, and it was wayyyyyy more painful than the last few. He said my cervix was still closed, and as he was feeling around it just hurt soooo bad! From what I've read, it sounds like he did a membrane sweep. Do drs often do this without forewarning? He's been my dr for a long time, and I do trust his judgement, but I just found it weird. I wouldn't have been opposed to a sweep now seeing as there's no progress with my cervix at all, but I would have thought I'd be asked first, or at least given a heads up about the pain.

In both pregnancies my doctors did it without warning. The first time I noticed it was a more painful internal, but didn't know that she had swept the membranes until my OB said it after. The second time I recognized the feeling from the first time.

My friend's doc did it w/o warning her with her last pregnancy, and she was furious. I do find it odd doctors don't at least say "hey we're going to go ahead and do this now".

I thought you had to be dilated at least 1 cm to be swept so they could get a finger up there. I'd be ticked if they did it and didn't mention it to me!

Yeah, they can't sweep your membranes if you're not dialated. To do it, they have to put their finger through your cervix to sweep it against your bag of water. You might have just been more posterior making it harder to reach.

This. There's no open hole, can't sweep anything. He may have been checking for effacement? That touches the cervix more and can be uncomfortable

When I was a fingertip dilated in the hospital (induction) the nurse said "You were just a fingertip, but I went ahead and made you a 1."  It hurt soooo bad.  Internal exams always hurt really badly too for me at the OB.  And that is why I'm opting out this time around.  You don't have to have any internal exams if you don't want them.  For the doctor's and nurses who do this type of thing without telling a patient that is their intention, it is very sad that you can't even trust your doctor.

Thanks for all the responses, ladies! Now I'm wondering if he was trying to loosen my MP, because it seemed like a good chunk was on his glove after, and I was still seeing brownish red discharge for the rest of the night. Whatever, the LO will get here when the time is right!

When you are this far along sometimes the internals are just painful. My doctor checked me at 36 weeks last pregnancy (and was doing everything in his power to stop labor so I know he didn't sweep anything), and I was wiggling around and gasping because it hurt so much. Everything is tender down there right now.
