Scowling

A few weeks ago, my 11 month old learned how to scowl. It started innocently enough, usually in response to not getting her way or when someone unfamiliar entered her space.

She scowls at everyone now! It's getting to be a little embarassing. She scowled, very deeply, at the director of our daycare today. She scowls at this male preschool teacher there, and really any adult who comes into her play space. I had her in line at Panera the other day, and she scowled at anyone in line trying to interact with her, including little kids.

My husband and I are very positive around her...we interact, play, exaggerate our expressions and voice tones. I just can't believe she has taken to scowling most often. Any suggestions of how to break her of this?

You can not be serious. She isn't doing it to be rude, she is learning how to control the faces she makes.

You want to control the faces your infant makes?

I'm sorry, but I think it sounds cute. If she isn't giving them the finger when she does it, I wouldn't worry about it. Then again, I take pictures of DDs' expressions when they poop ...

When my DD went through a screaming phase I would tell her to use her indoor voice and model it for her, but I didn't think she'd actually listen (she was 6 mo. at the time).  Even now when she's loud and shouldn't be I tell her that in order to sort of get the words in her head, but that's it.  When people greet her I mention that she should smile, but I don't necessarily expect her to, if that makes sense.  So far I figure that modeling politeness and describing it are a place to start.  But she's probably just enjoying trying out a new facial expression and it will pass quickly.  If someone is offended that's pretty silly on their part.  Just enjoy your growing girl and let it pass, parenting her kindly through it as you see fit.

My son does the same thing! I always just tell people he just got up from a nap lol. They are just figuring out facial expressions. I think it's cute. I usually just tickle him and it lightens the mood a little.

I hope you get it under control because I've heard that if she keeps making that face it'll freeze that way.

LMAO.

Baby scowls are hilarious. Also, now that I've read an entire thread about scowling...it no longer looks like a real word.

Geez ladies, calm down, be nice to this lady! I really don't think you have anything to worry about. When my son learns something new, whether it's a funny face or a weird noise, he does it constantly then moves on to the next odd ball thing. It's just what babies do! It's great that you want to be positive around her and make sure she sees this behavior as something to learn from. That's always a good thing to do around kids.

Bunch of jerks! Seriously.

Perhaps I framed this poorly but we do think it is funny, which is why I think that it has continued and gotten so bad. We all laugh and smile in response, which at this point might be encouraging her. Yes, it is funny, but it's become so constant that I was wondering first if anyone else has a scowl-y baby and second if anyone had some perspective about it being a phase or something that will pass. I hope you all enjoyed attacking me and my question and that it served some purpose for you. I believe the way you responded is the exact opposite of how this forum is intended to run. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all!

Attacked you? Oh honey. You may have phrased the OP poorly, but we're just responding to what seemed to be you asking how to get your 1yo to stop giving people the stink eye. Of course it's a phase.

Get used to it. If you say anything even remotely wrong, you will be jumped on. I still think it sounds cute, but I can imagine it might be vexing for you.
