I had shingles once on my back and my side, and it was completely miserable. He definitely needs to go to the doctor so they can give him something for the pain.. My doctor gave me a cream to put on, as well as pain meds.. I went to the doctor the first day that they actually started to hurt because I had no idea what it was, and it still lasted a week or more.. They are also very contagious to anyone who hasn't had chicken pox before, so I'd tell him to be careful around children and such..
