Any advice for dealing with virus symptoms?

So...tis the season for the virus.  Visited family over the weekend and my nieces and nephew who are ALWAYS sick sneezed, coughed, and hugged all over me.  So here I am, 18 weeks pregnant with a sore throat, cough, 2 ear aches, swollen lymph nodes, runny/stuffy nose, and an eye infection.  I have been to the doctor twice, both times they have told me it's just a virus that needs to run its course.  So, I have no choice but to take Tylenol and some antibiotic eye drops.

Does anyone have any other safe remedies for dealing with the symptoms?  This is going on day 4 without improvement.  I've tried lots of tea (caffeine free, of course), gatorade, soup, and Tylenol (which does nothing for the sore throat).  I can't get more than an hour of sleep at a time.

 Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Benadryl may offer some relief but at the very least will help you sleep through it!

ughh. I'm right there with you. I had a cold that was getting better and is now getting worse. I have been doing lemon tea with lots of honey for my throat. Benadryl and tylenol at bedtime. I'm "trying" to rest as much as I can but with a toddler thats easier said then done.

I'm thinking about calling my midwife to see what else I can take. You could call your obygn and see what they recomend as safe.

You can take Contac, which will dry up your nose and make your throat not ache so much. You should also try a Netty pot (with boiled tab or purchased sterile water). It will keep your nasal passages hydrated and wash some of the yuck out. I sympathize: I'm doing the same thing this week!

Me too! Except no eye infection. My throat is raw and killing me.

Try a saline rinse a few times a day. I like the simply saline one but a Netti pot works well too.

Definitely use a humidifier. Maybe you could ask about vicks rub. Hot tea with honey, humidifier, saline spray, lemon drops, tylenol and benadryl always help me. Good luck!!!

I had the same thing last week!!! When I approached day 5 of feeling like death, I finally called my OB to ask what, if anything, I could do. She said the following:

DO NOT take Tylenol cold and sinus. DO NOT take Vitamin C supplements. (Two things I was doing for 3 days+!)

She said DO go to your primary doc to get a Z-pack and DO take Mucinex. She also recommended increased fluids, an orange every day, and tea, lots of tea.

I went to my doc and he originally wanted to give me amoxcillin (spelling?) since I'm 20 weeks... I specifically asked for the Z-pack and he granted my wish! 2 days later, I was a new woman.

Good luck and feel better soon!

I had the same thing around 9 weeks. It's absolutely MISERABLE being pregnant! Dr. said Delsym (sp?) cough syrup and Robitussin DM is ok. Honestly no over the counter cough stuff work the same as Rx for me, but it did help settle things for a while. I had to sleep propped up- it always helps my cough.

I took plain tylenol during the day. Hope you feel better!

I was just in the same boat, but am slowly paddling to shore...

For the sore throat, I too tried everything.  Marshmallows were a big suggestion, but only a little help.  What worked for me was a whole can of pineapple with juice and a whole tray of ice cubes, blended until smooth.  It cools the throat (even though usually I prefer heat) and the pineapple kills bacteria to help it heal faster.  It worked like a charm!

For the ear aches, I slept with a heating pad on my pillow to apply heat to my ears (whichever one hurt worse).  Be sure to use one of the timer heating pads so it doesn't stay on all night and cause problems... but the heat overnight helped ease the pain in the morning as well.

Humidifier for the nose, along with a little vinegar in vaseline right under the nostrils.  It works sort of like Vicks?

The eye infection, I didn't have recently, but my grandmother treats them the same way as a sty... warm tea bag on the eye lid for a little while, pat dry, keep the eye closed and repeat.

 I hope you feel better!!

PS - My doctor told me Mucinex is pretty dangerous to take while pregnant.  The only thing she recommended, other than the tylenol, was the basic child's Robitussin cough syrup... but even then, she said I should only take it if I couldn't tough it out.  She said it's better for baby to go the natural route if possible.  HOWEVER, if you feel a fever coming on... call your doctor right away.  Fevers are definitely not good at all for baby!

Grapefruit seed extract is a great immune booster and has lots of other great health benefits, it was approved by my midwife for use during pregnancy (10-20 drops in water 3-4 times a day).

Another thing I do when I'm getting sick or am sick is chop up a clove of raw garlic, put it in a spoon and fill the spoon the rest of the way with raw local honey, swallow and chase with a mixture of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper (just a dash), and a little water (twice a day for 3 or 4 days). This sounds gross I know, and it isn't super pleasant, but it always helps kick whatever I'm coming down with or at least help it not last very long and it's definitely pregnancy safe.
