WOAH weight gain!

I just had my 20 week appointment today.

I was 148 at the start, jumped to 152, then lost weight come my 16-week appt at which I was 150 pounds. I got a mini lecture about making sure I'm eating enough, not overdoing the workouts, etc... and then today, I got on the scale to see 162!!! AH!

I do weigh myself pretty regularly and the other day on the scale at home showed 158. How is this possible?! Even the nurse was shocked and made me get on and off twice and even weighed herself to make sure it was accurate. She kept saying... "there is no way you gained 12 lbs in 4 weeks"... How embarrassing! I am feeling a bit bloated and constipated recently :( could that be an attributing factor?

This is my first pregnancy so I am so very new to this stuff... I know I'm in the "normal" range still, but should I be worried??? I eat ridiculously healthy, am a vegetarian, and work out 4-6 days/week.

letzgoracing81:
Constipation and water retention do play a role.

This, as well as what time of day you were weighed/what you've eaten that day vs. your last weigh in. I'm also inclined to believe your last weight check may have been a little off, unless you think there is a particular reason like m/s, you would have lost weight.

I don't really think this is a big deal because weight (especially for a woman) varies so wildly.

I don't weigh myself anymore but when I did it was not unusual for my weight to fluctuate from 5-6 pounds in the span of a few days (while not pregnant).

It's easily attributable to water retention, digestion slowing down, etc. Unless you're binge eating, there's really no way you've truly gained that much.

Unless you are being weighed on the same scale, at the same time of day, with the same thing on, I wouldn't be worried. I always go by my home scale since I can weigh myself first thing in the morning with nothing on. That being said, with both pregnancies I have experienced a major weight jump between 16 and 20 weeks. After that, my weight seemed to level off for a bit. I wouldn't be too concerned unless you continue to gain at that quick a rate.

This. I always go by my scale at home since appointments occur at different times in the day.

Retaining water and having trouble going to the bathroom can play a big role. don't worry you are 20 weeks so gaining weight is normal now.

I was 146 at the start at the appointment before my 20 week I was only 152 and I was pretty excited about not gaining to much because I did with my first and at my 20 week appointment I was 163. I was shocked not thinking I could have gained 11 lbs in a month and be up almost 20 lbs halfway through, but I am just keeping an eye on what I am eating since freaking out isn't going to do anything now. It will all come off eventually I guess...

This. Especially if you're feeling bloated, didn't have enough water, had been eating salty foods in the days leading up to your appointment... some days my weight fluctuates 3-4 pounds from water. Also, considering how little you had gained before, I really don't think it's THAT big of a deal. It's very likely some of it is water. The nurse shouldn't have made such a big deal about it IMO, that's just rude. If it's an issue, it's something your doctor can address with you in a tactful manner.

I gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks. So I know how you feel! I have lost 2 of those pounds over the past couple of weeks. Constipation and retaining water does have a lot to do with it. Don't worry.

could of been how much you ate that day, last time you did #1 and #2, were you wearing something heavy? Maybe a larger sweater, and maybe thicker pants, or boots?

Well, I guess I'm fatty mcfatterton, but I've gained 25 pounds at 21 weeks. My doctor doesn't seem concerned, so......

I gained like 1 or 2 lbs from week 7 to week 15 (total) and then 1-2 from week 15 to now (18).

Depends a lot on your body type and beginning weight on how much you should gain through your pregnancy.
