Nursery help with 2nd Baby - Moms w/ 2+ kids

There is a debate going on here with DH and I. We have an almost 10 month DD and are preggers with another. DD will be 16 months when baby (g-d willing) is born.

Right now she is in the room next to our master bedroom and we have 2 other bedrooms that are at the other end of the hallway. I don't want to move her down there (it's so far to be away from my little booba) but otherwise I think she'll be woken up by the new baby. So if we move her to another room, with her being this young should we build a whole new nursery or put a toddler bed in there?  DH says we should put her in a toddler bed and I am totally against it. I think she's to young. I think we should just get another convertable crib and be done with it.

What do you ladies think and what have you done?

I wouldn't want a 16 month old in a toddler bed, but I know people who have done it. We just put DD in a toddler bed last month and she's 2 1/2.

When they're in a toddler bed they can get out of bed and move around their room at night. Is that something you're ready to deal with?

OK I know you were looking for STM advice... but I'm just sharing my sister's experience...

They have two little boys 13 months apart - Their home had a master on the main level and 3 bedrooms upstairs. They kept the baby in the PNP Basinet downstairs until he was about 3 months then moved him up to the crib in the upstairs bedroom. When LO#2 came - LO#2 was in the PNP downstairs until 3 months. They put LO#2 in the crib and put LO#1 in a toddler bed (at about 16 months).

Maybe if you are super worried about LO moving around, get a video monitor for her room just so you can see what she is up to from across the house...

I wouldn't put her in a toddler bed yet.  Keep her in the crib as long as possible! If she is in a bed you have to worry about her wandering about the house when you sleep.  My son will almost be 3 when this LO arrives and I plan to have him in the crib even then as long as he stays Smile

I wouldn't put a 16 month old in a toddler bed. DS wasn't in one until he was 2. And even then I was nervous. We have all bedrooms upstairs and I didn't like the thought that he could get up and wander around (I always heard him when he was up though, and usually he always came right to our room). But also, the rails don't completely prevent falls. DS kept falling out of the bed at first, even though it has rails. Not a far fall, it's like 5 in, but it would still wake him up and make him cry.

DD jumped out of her crib at 18 months. She did fine in the toddler bed. It totally depends on the kid. Can you use a PnP for the baby for a few months and then transition the older one? I wouldn't transition before the baby because of age, but you don't want to kick her out right when the baby gets there.

We put DS in the room down the hall at about 18-19 mos.  He's in a twin bed with rails on it.  I put a gate in his doorway and baby proofed the room.  He's done perfectly fine with it, never fallen out of bed, and when he wakes up he just opens his bedroom door and stands at the gate and hollers for mama and dada.  Lots of times he plays with his stuffed animals in his bed for awhile and looks at books before he gets bored and yells for us.  The nursery across the hall is of course where we are putting this LO when he arrives.  We are just going to buy another monitor for the nursery since I still use the monitor in DS1's "big boy room".

Are you planning on having the baby in your room for a while? DS started climbing out of his crib at 17-18 months. He has been in a twin bed with a rail ever since. He has done great. I'd probably wait on buying the 2nd crib, and see where your daughter is when you're ready for the baby to move out of your room.

My DD will be 18 months when the new one comes and we have already purchased another crib. My pedi recommended leaving her in a crib until she tries to climb out or outgrows it and that is my plan for now.

I have friends who have put their kids in toddler beds anywhere from age 16-18 months. The main reason being that they would climb out of the cribs at night. I put DD in a double bed when she was a few weeks shy of turning two.

How does she do in a pack and play? Can you use that in the room until she is ready for a bed?

No way I'd do a toddler bed! We just put Hudson in his and I still felt that was pretty early developmentally! I would really keep her in the same room, but that's just me.

I wouldn't transition to a new room AND a toddler bed all in one night. I also wouldn't do it right when the baby is born, because that's a ton of change for a 16 month old to handle.

I would move her room soon and get her used to that first. If she seems ready to go to a toddler bed early then go for it, but I'm personally keeping my oldest in a crib as long as I can.

DD was 19 mos old when DS was born. Instead of making a new nursery for her, I made a big girl room but we bought a convertible crib for her to sleep in. I didn't want to put her in a big girl bed so young and are just now thinking it's time to get her switched. Her room also has a full size bed in it so we will probably have her sleep in that and put DS in a big boy bedroom using her crib since he will only be 15 months when this baby is born. If this baby is a girl, she will just share a room with DD and we won't have to move anything around.

I am against toddler beds before they're necessary. By necessary, I mean that the kid is either climbing out and hurting him/herself or that the kid is potty trained and needs to be able to get up to pee. It's just asking for trouble before necessary, IMO.

I'm keeping DD in her crib as long as possible. This baby will be in our room until he/she sleeps a good chunk at night, then will share a room with DD. We're buying a second crib. DD will not be out of her crib until the transition of sleeping in the same room as the baby is through. Or until she climbs out...then we'll just deal with it.

How does she sleep in her crib? If she sleeps well, there's no way I'd even consider moving her to a toddler bed yet. I'd just buy a second crib.

NO WAY I would want my 16 month old in a toddler bed.  My son who is now 17 months would have no clue to stay in a toddler bed.  The age old advice of keeping them in a crib as long as possible is probably the best solution.  I would find another crib, or put your new babe in a pack n play or bassinet.

She sleeps wonderfully in her crib! I am so glad I got some back-up today on this. DH is now on board with getting another crib. We were talking over dinner and have decided to leave DD in the nursery and just make another nursery down the hall so DD only has to adjust to the new baby and not everything else. :o) THANKS LADIES!

My girls are 16 months apart. I kept the nursery to the closest to my room, and moved the oldest to a different room. In a crib. I kept her in a crib until about 3 weeks ago. The transition went really well from a crib to a toddler bed at 3 years old. Then a few days later we slapped the younger one in a crib for them to share a room.

I would say for your sanity with a newborn and a toddler, keep the toddler in a crib as long as possible.

This was my DS. He has done fine in his toddler bed (and now a twin).

We did this- baby gate and baby proofed. And taught DS that he is not to get out of his bed.

Put a mattress on the floor and baby-proof the whole room/space.

My son slept in a co-sleeper for 6 months or so, then on a twin mattress in our room, and now on a twin + box spring combo (at age 2 - Getting a twin bed soon). Cheap and easy. It gives them independence and is safer than having them climb and fall out of a crib.
