Can you labor for a while before c-section? (this is my 2nd)

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this board. I had a c-section with my first after complications with the baby having breathing difficulties. This baby will also be a c-section. Here's my scenario...

My husband has to go out of town for work toward the end of January for a few days. Our c-section is February 5. He is concerned that the baby will come early and he will miss it (as am I). I was trying to reassure him and myself that if labor starts early, I can just labor for awhile (assuming the baby isn't in a hurry -- my last took 10 hours before they finally got him out) until he can fly back to Dallas and then they can do the c-section.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to opt to wait in labor for a c-section? Obviously, I don't want that, and I don't expect it will happen, but we just wanted to have an idea in case.

No they will not let you do that. Unless you specifically let staff know that you're willing to vbac (and your ob as well as the hospital you're delivering at will allow you to) you will be sent for a section shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Ditto previous poster. As soon as I hit 36 weeks my doctors were telling me to get to the hospital ASAP if my water broke, my contractions became timeable or I was bleeding.  Laboring prior was not an option.  My hospital does not allow VBAC's, it may be different if yours does.  Your best bet would be to arrange things so your DH will be close to home.

I can, and Dr told me if I came in at a 7 or so I could do a VBAC, but I live 90 mins away from the hospital and I'm still not sure I'm willing to labor on my own that long b/c since I've had 2 c/s I don't want to risk of uterine rupture.   I would ask your dr.

My midwife told me that it is active labor that I have to avoid. The first stages wouldn't be that big of a deal for me. They did give me the option of waiting until things started, but I was a little too nervous. Like PP said though, it depends on how VBAC friendly the hospital is. Ours is really supportive, but since I've had vertical tears, that means my uterine rupture risk is higher.

I think that you should talk to your provider and that it depends on the circumstances. It depends on why you are choosing a RCS over a VBAC whether or not this is a safe option for you.  You should be prepared for the possibility of a VBAC if you choose to wait.

That said, you can refuse a c/s if you choose to. You can wait at home and not rush to the hospital at the first  contraction. You can do all of those things. Just make sure you are prepared for a vaginal birth just in case.

I agree with this. People have trials of labour all the time and wind up with a c/s and it's fine. It sounds like you would be a vbac candidate (if it was a 'baby problem' that led to the c/s, not a 'mom problem', it is not as likely to reoccur).

Just don't go to the hospital right away or if you go to the hospital, refuse a c/s right away.

If it is a scheduled RCS, most doctors don't want you to labor beforehand as it can complicate the surgery-the baby's blood pressure can be affected, the baby can descend too far and need to be pulled back up, etc. That's why most RCSs are scheduled for 39 weeks-so that the risk of mom going into labor spontaneously is limited.

Like ppl said.  No laboring before a c-section.  I tried the natural way but ended up with an emergency c-section and my uterus was contracting so hard that the doctor had to tell the anesthesiologist to give me a drug to relax the uterus.  They want you in and out in little time. Unless you want to try for a VBAC.

I was scheduled for a RCS with DS.  I went into labor before that date.  I was in L&D for about 6 hrs before DS was born--and this was because I was 36w6 days so they waited 1hr into my 37th week to take him.  I think that if I was full term when I went in, they would've taken him without much of a delay.

This. My doctor perfroms RCS at 39 weeks or when you go into labor if it is before that. In my case, however, I am a candiate for VBAC, so he said we can scheule the RCS at 39 weeks and try for a VBAC if I go into labor before that if I want to. Talk to your doctor about your options.
