Cloth Napkins?

So I mentioned to Spouse last night that we need to invest in some cloth napkins instead of using regular napkins/paper towels, but I have no idea where to buy them or how much they should typically cost. We are saving up for our first (due in May) and I don't want to spend a lot on them. I found a dozen for $6.99 on amazon with free shipping (if I spent the $25 minimum of course). Is that a decent price? What kind of fabric is best? Size? They have a million and I don't even know where to start. I don't need anything fancy but machine washable would be nice. Figured you guys might have some ideas for me. TIA! =)

I've got 22 birdseye cotton ones that work well.  Bought them from SweetSlings on Etsy.  They were $1 each.

We haven't bothered buying paper towels since though...so even though it's like $5 / month on paper towels, they've paid for themselves...

They sell cloth napkins everywhere. Target, Kohls, Pottery Barn, Pier One. Pretty much anywhere you can buy plates and silverware! I have ones from these places also some from garage sales, antique ones from grandparents and I've made some of my own. GL!

Wherever you buy, I'd try to stick to as high a natural fiber content cotton, linen, etc as possible. Usually the synthetic fabrics don't absorb moisture well so you're just smearing stuff around.

I have a couple of sets of "nice" ones that I save for when we have company, but our everyday use cloth napkins are just ones that I have found on clearance.  There are almost always cloth napkins on clearance--you may not be able to get 8 matching ones, but when we're just sitting down with a sandwich at lunch, I really don't care if everyone's napkin matches ;)  I've paid as little as $0.25 each for sturdy linen napkins.

I've gotten mine on clearance at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Elder-Beerman, Kohls, etc.  Some were given to us as gifts for our wedding too.  They are great and we maybe spend $25 total and we have over 40 napkins.

IKEA sells teatowels for practically nothing. They're nothing fancy, just floursacking, but they last forever, and if you're just using them for spills, who cares that they aren't "beautiful." Then you could get a nice set with a matching tablecloth for special occasions.

I'm sure you could order them online if you don't have a store nearby.
