Assisted hatching

Talk to me about assisted hatching... Are you doing it? If not, have you considered it? If you're doing it what's the driving force behind it?

Our dr. just said that they do whatever is necessary.  If they need assisted hatching, they get it, if not, then they don't.  I like it like that because I figure that I do not need to think about it - the dr. know better than I do.

Married 12-12-04
TTC since 07
me-36 PCOS, Tubal Problems, and polyps removed 7-12
DH - 36 extremely handsome and no fertility problems
IUI 8-12 and 9-12 failed
IVF 12-21-2012 - 2 I think perfect no matter what the dr graded them (2B)embryos transferred Beta on 12-31-12 Positve - Beta is 21
Beta 2 1-2-13 - 31
Beta 3 1-4-13 - 53
Beta 4 1/9 - 212!
Ultrasound 1/10 - Nothing completely empty uterus Beta 1/14 - 743; Beta 1/17 - 1704 ultrasound shows nothing. Officially a miscarriage. 1/21 Beta 3900 Dr. says it ectopic. Ultrasound shows a miracle heartbeat right in the uterus where it belongs! Dr. says I can be cautiously optomistic!!! Hang in there baby!

Same here.  This past cycle they did do AH for my lone embie.  (I didn't know about it in advance.)  I think many REs do it for women in their late 30s or older or who have had previous issues with egg quality.

Me: 39. DH: 41. TTC since 2009.
FSH: 9.5 at highest. AMH (11/2011): 0.9. AFC: 10ish. HSG: Normal. SA: Normal.
July 2011 - Feb. 2012: 2 Clomid/TI cycles; 3 injectables/IUI cycles. Good response but BFNs.
Dec. 2011: Laparoscopy (clear) + hysteroscopy to remove uterine polyp.

April 2012: IVF #1: FSH 9.2, AFC 7-8. Antagonist protocol.
Started stims (300iu Gonal-F, 150iu Menopur) 3/28.
Added ganirelix 4/1. Trigger 4/5 (7 follies). ER 4/7: 7R, 0M, 0F. :-(

Nov. 2012: IVF #2: Long Lupron protocol.
Started Lupron 10/27. AFC 10+. Started stims (300iu Follistim, 150iu Menopur) 11/8.
Trigger 11/18 (7 follies). ER 11/20: 9R, 1M, 1F. 3dt of my one 6-cell embie on 11/23: BFN.

Dec. 2012: Hail Mary IUI cycle with leftover IVF meds: BFN.

Feb. 2013: IVF #3: Estrogen priming protocol.
Pre-AF: estro patch + ganirelix. AFC 8-10. Started stims (450 Follistim, 150 Menopur) 1/28.
Added ganirelix 2/4. Combined Lupron/HCG trigger 2/10 (6-ish follies).
ET 2/12: 6R, 1M, 1F w/rescue ICSI. My embie didn't make it. :-(

July 2013: DE IVF #1

PAIF/SAIF/PA35 welcome.

I believe my clinic does it on all embryos, because they think it gives them a little extra boost with the hatching process, giving them more of a chance to implant. It can cause harm to the embryos though and depends on the expertise of the embryologist, so maybe you could ask for success rates at your clinic? We didn't have a choice, but I'm sure every clinic does things differently.

Anyone have any idea why a clinic would deem it medically necessary? I assume it's embryo quality at time of ET...anything else?

In my class, our nurse explained that If we did a 5dt and the "shell" on our embryos were too thick, then they do AH. Make sense?

For this upcoming cycle (#3) we will be doing AH. We only did ICSI with the first two rounds and its pretty apparent that I have an egg quality issue so we're pulling out all the stops for this cycle and AH was one thing I asked my RE to confirm with the embryology lab that they'd be willing to do it for us. They agreed it was a good idea so that is what we're doing!

Yes we did it.
Why? Because we wanted to do any and everything possible to increase our chances of success.

I did some research about it prior to our recent failed FET. It seems like it's most helpful for ladies who are AMA and for FET's, since the outer embryo shell tends to be harder in those cases. There is a risk involved though, so I think most RE's only do it if neccessary.

Hola! As with many of the other PPs, we were told AH would only be done if needed. I guess it has something to do with embryos that have tough shells that they worry won't easily hatch. We haven't needed it so far. I have heard that there is some increased chance of identical twins with AH. GL either way.

TTC #1 for about 3.5 years
ME: 37, PCO, immune issues?, teflon uterus (my added diagnosis)
HIM: 38, Perfect. (Showoff.)
Month before starting Clomid, spontaneous pregnancy. m/c at 7 weeks and D&C.
Four months of Clomid, one IUI, with Intralipid each cycle: BFNs all
IVF 1.0 July 2012 -- Lupron, bravelle, menopur, estrogen, progesterone supps, intralipid. 14 ER, 14 fertilized, 1 blast transferred, 2 on ice. BFN
FET 1.1 -- 10/2, transferred our 2 blasts. Lupron, PIO, estrogen, baby aspirin, prednisone. BFN.
IVF 2.0 December 2012 -- Bravelle, Menopur, Ganirelix, Prednisone, Metformin, estrogen, progesterone supps. 22 eggs retrieved on 12/14, 17 mature, 15 fertilized. OHSS anticipated so ET cancelled. 3 embryos frozen.
Broke up with old RE. Moving on to new dude. Maybe the change of scenery will be just the trick for our frosties. On BCPs for possible April FET.
