Need advice - My nine month won't sleep at night

For as long as I can remember.. My son would sleep from 8pm to 7 or 8am with 2 little naps during the day. For the past 2 weeks tho he's been going down at 8 no problem then wakes up not even an hour later. He wake up so mad and he is only happy if I turn on the lights and let him play. He is then up till midnight or later and wants to sleep till 10am. Dad and I go to bed at 9 so I can't let him stay up late. I've tried waking him up early and barely letting him nap during the day or stuffing him full of food before bed but nothin helps. I haven't really tried letting him cry it out.. He's never had a need for that.. Goes to bed fine otherwise. So any advice on how to get him back to sleeping at night or maybe why he is wanting up at night? Thanks so much :)

My son is 11 months old and has been doing the same thing since 9 months which was right around when he started pulling up in his crib.  He would just stand there screaming in his crib.  It became a nightmare putting him to sleep.  He would wake up an hour on the dot after going down and we gave up and just brought him in to bed with us.  It was the only way we could get some sleep.

I don't really have any advice, as we are going through the same thing, but could it be a tooth? Could just be a quick phase.

Man that's a tough one.  We don't let our kid cry it out but I would NOT be turning on the lights no way. You have to keep the lights off and just maybe move him into your bed, try rocking him, feeding him? Are you breastfeeding? I usually just nurse the baby back down.  But I would say the most important thing is that you don't turn on the lights and play with him again.  Or cut out a nap or something?

Good luck!

First, do not turn on the lights and let him play. Your job is not to make your little one happy at that hour. It is to teach him to sleep and be able to put himself back to sleep.

Second, sleep begets sleep. Do not cut out naps. If a baby gets overtired, they cannot relax and fall asleep. At 9 months, your LO should be taking two naps....around 10 and 2. Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is a great resource. Your library probably has it. Definitely check it out.

We did Ferber with all three of our kids (I have an 11 month old but can't update my siggy). We did the gradual extinction method. Let baby cry for 5 minutes. Comfort. Leave. Let baby cry for 7 minutes. Comfort. Leave. Continue adding a couple of minutes up until a maximum point you are comfortable with. My DH went in to comfort each time and it worked much faster once the babies realized they weren't getting me and nursing.

Ditto to what sunnybrook said.  I will add though, that there is a notorious 9 month sleep regression.  Google it for advice and support.  Basically, stick to your routine, maybe adding a bit more awake time if you don't think he's tired.  But ride it out and it will go back to normal.  Just don't create any new bad habits in the mean time.
