Road trip tips?

DH and I are on a road trip this weekend. Today we're driving 8.5 hours to San Antonio from New Orleans, and Sunday we're driving back DH's brother is gettjng married and I didn't have a lot of vacation days. I hate long car trips New Orleans to Houston is my normal limit and have a feeling this one will be rougher than previous trips. What tips do you have when driving long distances? I'd like to stop every two hours, but we can't make them long stops because we need to be there earlier in the evening for the rehearsal and dinner and despite leaving early, we have and will hit traffic along the way... Thanks!

I would just try to stretch a little when you are able to stop.  Nothing strenuous, just get your blood moving.  Avoid salty food (eat fruit) and drink lots of water.

Bring a pillow for your back, and if you have a seat warmer, use it. I traveled 12 hours when I was 28 weeks, I'm not gonna lie to you, it was awful. We planned on stopping every two hours, that went right out the windor when I had to pee every 45 minutes. Stay hydrated, and like PP said stay away from salty snacks. Good Luck, safe travels!

We drove Houston to Ohio when I was 32 and 33 weeks. Make sure your DH gives you a really good foot rub in the evening. Be prepared to stop a lot more than every two hours. Drink tons of water. Everyone says avoid salty food, but nothing puts me in a chipper road trip mood like some Bucce's beef jerkey, so if you like beef jerkey and clean restrooms, pull over for the beaver. :)

Haha yeah, Buccee's is one of our planned stops. It's hard not to! Thanks for the tips!

Frequent stops, plenty of water, healthy snacks, and pillows. Basically just think, what do I need to be comfortable? And bring that.

Get out and Walk, Walk, Walk! DH and I traveled from our home in MI to Northern WI for Thanksgiving and it wound up taking us almost two hours longer becaues I just had to get out and stretch after a while.  On the way home I really just wanted to get there, so we didn't stop nearly as often and I was miserable for like a week after.  Don't try to just keep pushing through, you'll end up being sorry and in pain later-- or at least I was!  Oh, our normal drive is 10 hrs, and on the way up it took us more like 11.5.  ON the way back we still did it in 10 but I was so uncomfortable!

The only time this pregnancy that I swelled up was when we went on our babymoon and that was 3 months ago and only a 5hr drive!

I would definitely find a way to prop your feet up to try to minimize the swelling -- even if you have to sit in the back seat to comfortably do so.

When we moved we had to drive from FL to OH. My doctor told me no more than 2 hours at a time as if my bladder would hold out that long, and minimum 15 mins walking around and stretching.
Recline your seat a bit too so your not as crunched.
And as others said avoid salty snacks, pillows etc.

Monday we're heading out on a 7 hour road trip.  The last road trip I did was 14 hours, but I was only 14 weeks (or there abouts).  As others have said; stay hydrated, avoid salt, and stretch when you can.  Make sure you're as comfortable as possible in the car (even if that is in the backseat, with pillows and blankets).

Good Luck!

In addition to the things already mentioned, my doctor suggested stretching my legs frequently while in the car, pointing and flexing my toes, writing the abc's with my feet, things to keep the blood moving to avoid clots. He is also having me pick up a copy of my medical records before we travel for new years, just in case, so that any different doctors would best be able to address our needs should something come up. And make it clear to DH that you will be scheduling the rest stops...when mine wasn't very supportive of stopping every 1-2 hours (I think it offends his ego when we have to pass cars we had already passed earlier in the trip)  I told him when he's growing a human, he can make that decision...works every time :)

The nice thing is TX has higher speed limits, lol. Sometimes I opt to sit in the back seat for a stretch of the trip so I can put my legs up and get a little more comfortable. Bring a pillow and some water, you should be good. We drove to SA for thanksgiving I think we're like a halfway point from New Orleans we got stuck in that 100 car pile up for an hour and a half and we still only needed to stop twice and I was totally fine with that. Just keep an eye on swelling in your ankles and feet if you're prone to that. Have fun!

Make sure there's nothing/no one behind you so you can recline. After travelling over Thanksgiving I told my daughter she's going to be sitting on the other side of the car during Christmas travel so I can recline. I felt too crunched!
