1st Trimester Weight Gain?

Does anyone know how much weight, if any, we should gain in the 1st trimester? I am a little worried, because I thought by 7 weeks I would have put on at least a pound. I in fact, have been losing weight. I am a petite girl, normally weighing around 117lb (5'3"). I am now down to 113lb. I don't remember the last time I saw that number on the scale. I have had NO appetite, so I know I haven't been eating as much as I used to, but I know I am hitting at least 1200 calories a day.

Should I let my OB know I've been losing and not gaining?? Or is this fairly common??

You don't have to gain any and losing a little is very common as well as long as you're eating and keeping down fluids.

I'm sure The Bump has information about this...

but if you haven't been eating as much, of course you'll lose weight, and no, you don't have to gain any during the first trimester. I thought this was well-known...

How much weight you should gain varies from person to persona based on their starting weight. Generally loosing weight in the first tri is no big deal, Ive been eating MORE than normal and still loosing weight.

The books all seem to say one "should" gain 0-5 pounds in the first trimester, but not to be surprised with small losses.  I'm on the thin side, and my OB recommended I keep my gain to 5-10 pounds in the first 20 weeks.  He said he's not worried unless I drop dramatically or can't keep anything down.  If you are concerned, checking in with the dr can't hurt.

Some women lose weight during the first trimester. It may be due to nausea and vomiting, or even just changes in diet. I lost like 10 pounds during the first trimester when I was pregnant with my son. Once the vomiting subsided around 20 weeks, I began gaining weight gradually.

It's probably not cause for concern, but i would call your MD if you are worried.  Maybe try sneaking in extra calories by switching to whole fat dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.  Also adding in small snacks.  I have a smaller frame also, but with my DD I gained 10 pounds in the first tri, because I felt sick when I didn't eat.

Sounds like it's fairly common to lose, so I'll try not to worry! I can't wait until my appetite is back so I can work out again and actually enjoy a meal!

common- i lost 7lbs from weeks 8-13. You should really be gaining until the 2nd tri, maybe a couple lbs, and the rest should be gained in 3rd tri. I havent gained anything and im 16 wks.

you don't really need to focus on gaining weight the first trimester..and if you do gain its usually around 5lbs I think? but don't worry about losing..i lost almost 15 lbs the first trimester with my son because I was so sick...granted i WAS overweight so it didn't really matter much...if you have a concern I would just let your Dr know...but as long as baby is growing fine all is good :)

Oh I've gained prob 3lbs prob. However, my weight fluctuates alot. I have gained 10lbs in a week before and lost that much in a week.  Before pg, I would watch what I ate during the week and then eat whatever on the weekends- so it was always up and down.  This is the most my weight has ever stayed the same- and boy I'm eating whatever I need to make me feel better.  :)

*lurking from January 2013/3rd Trimester*

I started out weighing 212 and lost 5lbs!! When I was 20 weeks I was back up to 212lbs. I'm 32 weeks now and according to my last appointment I've gained 11lbs, 1lbs a week since 20 weeks.

I would not worry about it unless your DOCTOR is worried. Your body knows what it needs to do and during the first trimester the baby is not really needing *food*, he/she is taking nutrients from other places. Good luck and your doctor will know your weight record.

It is fairly normal to lose weight in your first trimester. With my first pregnancy, I lost 18 lbs by weeks 20 and finally gained a couple back by week 25. I lost about 5 lbs. with this pregnancy and have since gained it back and then some (twins). I wouldn't worry if you are eating healthy and your doctor is not concerned.

Losing weight is very common in the first trimester. You typically will make up for it in the second and third trimester. :) With my first pregnancy I was quite thin going into it and still lost 18lbs the first 20 weeks. When I finally managed to gain a pound at that 20 week appt my doctor's office cheered for me. :)

I'm sure all is well with you!

You need to eat more than 1200 calories. Add some milk or juice, even, to get it up to 1600 at least.

1200 calories is dieting for most people isn't it? I know you're small but that seems pretty low.

Agrees.

Drink some milk.

But today is the last day of my first tri and I gained no weight.  Everyone is different.
