TTGP Questions

I posted this on the TTC board by accident so I wanted to post here and introduce myself. We have been TTC since August, no luck yet, but I do have a few questions and since we are not sharing with anyone that we are trying I was hoping it was OK to ask here.

When H and I decided to start TTC I discussed going off birth control with my gyno and at that time found out she no longer works as an OBGYN and is only a regular gyno (sorry I know there is probably a more specific term but Im not sure what it is).

I know we havent been TTC a very long time, but we are having some issues and I dont know who to go to and if my regular doctor can help or if I have to find an OBGYN even though I am not pregnant.

Everyone in my immediate family conceived on their first try practically, so I am kicking myself that we waited to start. I didnt want to get pregnant right away, but even though my doctor said as soon as you go off BC you should be ready to go, I have to wonder. Since stopping birth control, which was in the middle of the summer, I have had very short cycles. I started using an ovulation test right away and my LP was as short as 5 days and increased to 8-9 days after starting vitamin B6. I decided to try progesterone cream this cycle (along with pre-seed, softcups, standing on my head- everything haha). I also started using the Clearblue Fertility monitor this cycle vs just the sticks to see if identifying more fertile days would help.

So today is either day 11 or 12 after ovulation and once I got to day 10 I was SO excited that this would be my month, and I get my period today. My concern is that my LP is still too short and I want to discuss with my doctor options instead of the cream (since it isnt as potent). My other concern is my husband is on a blood pressure medication that may potentially impact fertility in that it can make it hard for the sperm to penentrate the egg. Unfortunatley, they cant test for this, only switch meds if needed, but that would have side effects for him if we have to do that. Right now, I need to figure out if its me first before we switch anything on him,

I know this is really long and I apologize, but can a regular gyno prescribe things like progesterone, clomid, etc or do I need to be seeing an OBGYN? I just dont know who to even make an appt with to discuss my concerns.

Thank you so much for all your help.We arent telling anyone we are TTC yet, so I cant ask my friends/family either.

Thank you!

Okay, you do NOT even need to be thinking about Clomid right now, for fuuuuck's sake. You need to see an OB/GYN for prenatal care. If you have the misfortune of not getting pregnant after a year of trying, you see an RE and have proper testing before even touching Clomid.

My GYN no longer delivers. He does treat fertility issues and sees patients for pregnancy conformation.

Did you speak with any Dr before you started B6 and the cream? You could potentially be doing more harm than good.

Either way, good luck!

Whoa- you should be speaking with a doctor before taking B6 and using progesterone cream. Is there another doctor at your doctors office who is an OBGYN? I suggest you call your current doctor and tell them what you've been doing and your concerns.

Thanks- yes I definitely realize thats a down the road issue, Im just in limbo as to what doctor to see. My gyno used to be an OBGYN so I was a little surprised when I learned she no longer is. I just had an annual exam a few months ago, so it would be a little weird to go for another so soon.

Can I just call an OBGYN and set up an introduction appointment without having to have another annual which I just had? I guess I just feel weird calling and trying to make an appt when I dont officially have anything wrong haha

I completely understand your dissapointment. Everyone in my family keeps asking me numerous times a month, "are you pregnant yet?" All my sisters got pregnant after the 1st month - some got pregnant while on BC. Frusterating, I know! However, the previous poster is correct - no doctor will give you clomid until you have been trying for a year.

Before ttc, I never understood that it would feel like this every month. I thought it would be a journey I would enjoy with my DH but instead I am upset and dissapointed every month, and my DH is unsure of what to do when I cry on his shoulder after every month of getting AF. lol.... it is a roller coaster for sure!

Good luck!

Read the newbie link. Things there will answer your questions. It can take several months to regulate off BC. Look into charting/temping to go along with the OPKs. It will help you learn more about your body. FF has tutorials on how to do it. Don't borrow trouble and start thinking about needing clomid or progesterone. And if your DH is concerned about his meds then have him call his doctor and talk about it.

Its just two doctors and they both stopped doing OBGYN. The B6 is just in a b complex so there was no need to ask the doctor ahead of time, if I was doing crazy dosages I would have. I dont plan to continue the cream, it was more of an experiement to see if it would lengthen the LP, which it did significantly. I wont continue with it without seeing the doctor first, I just wanted to see if that was potentially my issue since everything I read on LPD and symptoms fit me exactly.

I guess I just felt stupid to call my doctor if this isnt her area and I know I need a new doctor, but I didnt know if they would take me before I became pregnant.

I will call my regular gyno first and go from there. Thank you all so much!

You just answered your own question. If you don't know what you're asking to set up an appointment for then you don't need an appointment. OBs or GYNOs should not be prescribing those drugs unless they're properly monitoring you, which is unlikely.

I know we havent been TTC a very long time, but we are having some issues and I dont know who to go to and if my regular doctor can help or if I have to find an OBGYN even though I am not pregnant.  What makes you think you are having issues?  Are you charting?  Do you know if and when you are ovulating and are you having sex at the right time?

Everyone in my immediate family conceived on their first try practically, so I am kicking myself that we waited to start. *Doesn't mean that you should/would.will  I didnt want to get pregnant right away, but even though my doctor said as soon as you go off BC you should be ready to go, *Sometimes it takes your body time to regulate after stopping BC.  I have to wonder. *Also - the "rule of thumb" in the baby making world is that if you are younger than 30 and have no reason to believe you have fertility issues, you should try for a full year before you get a referral from an RE from your doctor.  If you are 30-35 or have known issues (PCOS) you should see a doctor after 6 months.

I suggest signing up with Fertility Friend and start charting your basal body temperature as well as using your OPKs.  If you find that you are not ovulating, you should talk to your doctor.  Otherwise try better timing and try to have patience.  I know it is hard.  Trust me, I know.

Lots of luck to you!

Yes- I guess I was just fustrated since my gyno said as soon as you stop BC you can get pregnant and my sister got pregnant on BC (and she has PCOS so even more shocking and wonderful that she got pregnant twice without even trying too much). Based on how everyone I am related too seemed to get pregant the second they tried, I was scared to start trying too early if we werent ready. I could kick myself now since DH suggested we start trying early. Arrr

With DH, we have an appt with a specialist to discuss if other medications may be safe for him to try, but of course like any specialist we have to wait a few months to get in with him. Unfortunatley, if the medication is an issue, it cant be tested with a normal SA, so you can only switch meds, wait 3 months, and see if it helps. And we may not be able to switch anyway, so we have to wait until that appt. I just want to make sure everything with me is A-OK to rule out if I am the problem first.

Thank you all for your help! I will see if my gyno can do some blood work and make sure all my levels are in check

Thank you all for your responses. Yes, we are tracking using the Clearblue Fertility monitor and making sure to get busy in the fertile window. I considered tracking temps too, but I wasnt sure if all the tracking would conflict/drive me crazy.Do you guys track with both? I was concerned with the temp charting since my work schedule varies everyday so I dont get up exactly the same time every morning and I didnt know if this would make it less accurate.

In your case, the monitor is probably a better option. And since you have already dropped a chunk of change on that, might as well use it.

It's not that hard to set an alarm to get up at the same time every day and then go back to sleep if you don't need to get up though.

Thank you. I understand it isnt hard to set the alarm to get up and temp and go back to sleep. I am willing to do it. I just think if one night Im going to be at 9pm and another night at 1am, even if I set the alarm, my sleep cycle, the time I eat dinner, etc is still varied and may impact the results. I have no problem doing it and would buy additional monitors too if its better, I just dont want to start having things conflict and then not know what to believe. For the most part, I do get up at 6am most days regardless of when I go to sleep I just didnt know if having different lengths of time sleeping, different eating schedules, etc would all impact the temps

It won't.  As long as you get 3 solid hours of sleep before temping.

You can call an OBGYN and schedule a pre-conception appointment. Then you can explain a Dr all of your concerns and be guided in the right direction.... Good luck
