Swaddling gear--overwhelmed FTM needs help!!

I have read the Happiest Baby on the Block book and think swaddling sounds like a great idea...but there are SO MANY PRODUCTS for this out there: Halo sleepsacks, Miracle Blankets, Aden & Anais swaddling wraps, SnuggleMe, and on and on and on it goes!!! Somebody help a FTM out--what actually WORKS, in your experience? I am trying to start a registry and have no idea which way to go on this.

We used Aden + Anais swaddle blankets, and liked them. My son started rejecting the swaddle around 4 months.

Neither of my DDs liked being swaddled past the first couple days in the hospital. I had one swaddling blanket, but I don't remember what brand it was. It didn't get used. Now, the sleepsacks are awesome for keeping baby warm since they can't have loose blankets. I have only the regular versions, not the swaddling version.

DD liked to be swaddled for the first two months. I liked the halo sleep sacks with the swaddles a lot because she couldn't break out of them...for the first month. The miracle blanket worked well too. The AA blankets are nice, but no math for DD. she broke out of them in a minute. I use them for a lot of things and then I used them when I had to double swaddle once she could break out of the halo sacks. I wouldn't buy a ton of things because baby might not want to be swaddled. The AA blankets are good for a milultitude of things, not just swaddling!

My LO broke out of EVERY swaddle we tried  (we tried 6 different products before finding what worked). No matter what blanket we used or how we swaddled, he'd break it and have the blanket over his face in no time. The sacks didn't work because they weren't tight at all and he still startled awake.

What finally worked, gave me piece of mind, and just over all rocks was the Woombie! We started out with a small one, then moved to the big baby one that we just stopped using last week. *tear*. We used the basic summer one and always dressed him in a footed sleeper underneath it. He loved his woombie so much. We only had one of the small ones and I ended up washing that thing ALL the time so I really wish we had bought two so we could rotate, but never did. We DID buy two of the big baby ones and that was great.

If the woombies are too expensive, the Swaddlepod is essentially the same thing, the fabric isn't nearly as nice though, and they are often too short. The woombies are extra long to make up for taller babies.

Most people swaddle the first 2-4 months and then move on to things like the Halo sleepsacks.  For swaddling during the daytime we used the larger A&A muslin swaddles and they worked great.  They also double as blankets, covers and emergency clean up rags.  At night time we used the miracle blanket because it was escape proof and I tended to worry less about it coming loose and posing a suffocation hazard.

Most newborns love the security and comfort of swaddling, but there are rare ones that do better without swaddling or need modifications like having an arm out. It's all about figuring out your individual child's needs.

After a few months you will need to stop swaddling your baby because they become more mobile and swaddling will be too restrictive and possibly dangerous if they tend to roll.  We stopped swaddling about 4 months of age.  After that we moved on to Halo sleepsacks and quilted Grobags  (love them!)  for  cold weather.

We used the Miracle Blanket from birth until 7 months. My son was able to get out of all other swaddles.

DS never liked the sleepsack.  We used the Swaddleme and the Aden and Anais boutique swaddling blankets until he could roll over.

A & A muslin blankets.  DS refused a swaddle after the first few days so at least those we still use.

We had a woombie too and he screamed bloody murder in that thing.

For actual swaddling, we liked the Halo Sleepsacks with the wings but there are endless uses for the Aden + Anais swaddle blankets outside of swaddling so even if those don't work for you swaddling, you'll use them for lots of other things. I never used them to swaddle much but they make great burp cloths, nursing covers, car seat covers, rolled up as head or body support, summer blankets, or if you have a hot baby like mine, all the time blankets. Even at 9 months, it's still his preferred blanket for naps because he likes to snuggle with it.

I love the halo sleep sack swaddle. I don't have to worry about LO breaking out of a blanket and you can swaddle with arms out for when they are being transitioned to a sleep sack. Also they're approved by the SIDS organization. Peace of mind!

The Woombie, hands down.  I feel like I should be earning some commission from the company because I'm always extolling its virtues, but it really is that amazing!  It zips so baby can't break out of it, it's got a little stretch so it doesn't completely impede baby's movements, and the material is soft.  They have different sizes to accommodate babies at multiple ages.  We used it every night, and sometimes it was the only thing that would get him to nap during the day.

Ps I love he Aden and Anais muslin swaddles but not for swaddling. I use them as blankets, drape them over the car seat and I wear one as a scarf when I'm out then pull it down for a nursing cover. They get softer with every wash. I would still get those too.

My DD loved the Miracle Blanket for 4 months. We had the swaddleme with Velcro also but she broke out of them by 3 weeks old.

Miracle blankets work for the first 4 months. When you baby gets too long for it, you just swaddle the arms and leave the legs free. Baby miracle suit worked well from 4 to 7 months. It allows the baby to move, but it takes some effort, so sudden jerks are muffled. I found that swaddling works wonders, but the baby may not like the process of being swaddled. Once they are in the cocoon, however, they relax and sleep happily.

I'm still swaddling DD in a Halo swaddle sleep sack.  We started with newborn and moved up to size small last month.  I used A & A blankets the first week, but DD started busting out of them.  They're awesome blankets, regardless.  We use them for everything.

These were our favorites as well, especially the fleece over cotton.  the A&A blankets have a ton of uses, but we never used them to swaddle our LO.

We really liked the Halo Sleepsacks with the velcro swaddle things for at night.  During the day I preferred a blanket with a little bit of stretch.  I had some from Target that worked great.  Every one seems to love the Aden & Anais ones as well, I have never personally used one.

All my friends with kids told me I HAD to get the Aden and Anais blankets. I also was given some of the swaddle wraps by Summer. Sleepsacks are different, they're meant to replace blankets since you can't put them in the crib. They don't swaddle, just provide warmth.

DS was swaddled for a LONG time like well into 6-7 months.  We didn't have any special swaddle blankets.  We had a lot of the hospital blankets and a pack that we got at my baby shower(maybe graco).  We used this swaddle technique and he loved it(and sttn). He didn't start breaking out until we was more mobile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K4VdZxwsu4
