Temping

After joining and posting my newbie post, I got very interested in temping. I went out and purchased my thermometer tonight. Any words of wisdom before I begin?

1. Keep your BBT on or in your nightstand so you can easily grab it in the morning.

2. Figure out the best time to take your temp. (Example: DH gets up an hour before me, sometimes I hear him, sometimes I don't, but my alarm is now set to his and I take my temp at 6:30am even if I don't have to get up.)

3. Have something to record your temperature on. I keep a notepad and pen on my nightstand so I can record and go back to sleep (I only get right up once in awhile).

4. If you haven't already - sign up for fertility friend.

Good Luck!

MrsH0714:

Yes, some ladies on here work in shifts (e.g. nurses) so they have figured a different system out that works for them. If you don't have this issue, I recommend taking your temperature at the same time everyday. I don't work Friday-Sunday but I still set my alarm to 6:30 (DH isn't thrilled about the weekend temps, but oh well). If you record a temperature 1/2 hr off from previous temps, you will get an open circle of fertility friend. Some people can still see the temp shifts with open circles, but I like a nice, clean chart.

ETA: I should add that you should get 3 hrs of sleep. Days when I don't, I still record at the same time and just note that I didn't get much sleep. If you drink the night before, your temp will likely be elevated so I note that as well. Other things like stress and sickness I've found to mess with my temps (like my chart this month is super fugly). Try not to look too closely at every single temp, but the overall picture.

Just make sure you take it at the same time every morning, first thing when waking up and before moving around. Fertility friend is a great way to chart your temps (link in mine and many poster's siggies). Read the fertility friend tutorial. It will start making more sense as it goes along. The first month is a learning curve, but it should start making sense soon. I've been temping for 5 months and feel like for the first time in my life I finally know what the heck my body is doing. I know when I O'd, I know when AF is coming, I don't have to wreck my brain with thoughts of "maybe AF is late but I don't know!" In your cycles are fairly regular, you'll start seeing a pattern soon and things become more predictable. And if you aren't already, I recommend adding OPKs and charting CM. Good luck to you!
