Cows milk

So we're rapidly approaching the 1 yr mark (how is this possible?!?) and I'm starting to think about giving DS cows milk. He is still Bfing, and I plan to continue, but at what point is it ok to start replacing one of his BM bottles w/ milk - and should he be taking that in a sippy instead of a bottle? Our pedi mentioned it would be ok to start early at 11 months, but I wondered if it was better to do half BM/half CM? And when I told my mom about giving him WCM she said just give him 2%. I'm probably over thinking all this, but just wondered what others were doing. It seems like a really abrupt thing just, wham, 1 year old, no more bottle/BM. He is great w/ the sippy but has only had water so far... and also amounts. If he typically gets 4oz bottle of BM do you offer the same amount of CM?

You'll probably get mixed answers on this. My pedi recommends offering WCM in a sippy at meal times(you can do half/half if you want), but does not recommend putting WCM in a bottle. If LO is thirsty in between meals offer water in a sippy.

I continued to BF DD morning/evening until she was 19m, but at 12m I was still nursing just as much as I had been at 9-10m. We didn't really stop dropping sessions until 15-16m. That's a personal choice however, so if you'd like to be done or cut down on BF sessions at 12m go for it.

I'm already cutting down on BF sessions with DS, and obviously now replacing those with bottles. However, once he is better able to handle a sippy cup we'll ditch those bottles in favor of a cup (of BM until he's 1, and then switch it to WCM).

I would think as to the amount, whatever he is taking in now, you would want to slowly build him up to that amount with CM. I got blasted for saying I give DD1 2%, but I did. I've heard that BM is usually low fat. I know my girls had trouble gaining weight while I BF'd them, for 2 and 8 weeks, respectively. I gave up because I wasn't producing enough, and went to FF, and they chunked up big time. So, I think if you kind of wean LO off of BM while weaning him onto CM (whatever you choose whole or reduced), he will probably acclimate just fine. Most kids do. Do you pump or does he BF from tap? Because you may want to warm the milk first so that it doesn't come as a shock. My pedi. says that DD1 should be getting at least 16 oz of milk a day, and that was when she was two, so maybe that should be a target amount. I know plenty of kids who drink way more than that, but DD1 not really big on milk, and gets one cup of warm milk at night, and the rest of her calcium and the like from yogurt and cheese. Sometimes I will give her cold chocolate milk just as a treat, rather than actual chocolate. Go organic, that way, LO won't have all those antibiotics and hormones and crap they put in regular dairy.

As far as switching from BM to WCM...just go with whatever works for you. Some LOs will go cold turkey. I started with 1 part WCM to 3 parts BM, then half and half then...you get the picture. We also used this time to switch from bottles to sippy cups. I would really not recommend giving LO anything but whole milk unless you discuss it with you pedi. The fat and extra calories in the milk is not just for weight gain. It is also important for LOs development. My DD1 was 90% for wt and ht and I didn't switch her to 2% until after 18 months. Even then my pedi was on the fence.
