Theo

Wdyt as a stand alone name?  I'm not a fan of Theodore, remindes me too much of the chipmunks but I love Theo.

I personally feel the same way you do.  I like Theo but not Theodore so much.  I have a LO named Eli as a full name, DH and I couldn't agree on a formal name so its just Eli.  Honestly though, I knew a guy named Theodore growing up, but he went as TJ and I never knew his full name until graduation practically.  Now that we're older he goes by Theo, not TJ so atleast he has options which is the main benefit of using a full name.

I generally dislike nicknames as a stand alone name.  There's a few that work IMO but generally, no.  My DS is Theodore and we call him Teddy and I kind of dislike Theo altogether so I'm probably the wrong person to ask, lol.  But I would give him the option of the formal name.  And, I can certainly attest it gets his attention faster if I call out Theodore so it does have it's uses.

I generally prefer a longer formal name with a NN, but I do think this is one of the few names that can stand alone as a first name.

FWIW, my SF's name is Ted-- just Ted.  It's not short for Edward or Theodore and I have to say I have never thought twice about it until I really started thinking about names.

This reminds me of a story my friend told me.  She was walking around Arlington Cemetery looking at the graves.  Some guy came along and said "Who is Edward Kennedy?  And where is Ted Kennedy??"

 

OP - I'm much more of a formal name with nickname person.  I don't even like Jack as a stand alone name.  I vote for Theodore with the nickname Theo.

I'm not a fan, either as a stand alone or as a nickname for Theodore. I have trouble with names, and Theo gives me a lot of anxiety because I can never remember if it's Theo or Leo. Stupid, I know, but I have a cousin, and I'm 98% sure his name is Theo. There's a 2% chance it's really Leo. I just can't say for sure. I really like Ted/Teddy as a nn for Theodore.

I don't care for it as a nn or a stand-alone.

Theodore is fine, but my favorite nn is Teddy. Theo just sounds "thug-ish" to me or something.

I'm torn on this, too. I really like Theo, but am having a hard time pulling the trigger on Theodore. Plus, I really hate Teddy, so it would be nice to not even have that as an option. But,in general I think Theo is more of a nn, so I wouldn't personally do it. Very helpful analysis, I know. :)
