dropping a bottle or reducing oz before a year

I hate to post this question, because it was asked the other day.  However, it got a little off track and I'm not sure anyone really got an answer.

DS currently drinks 32oz formula/day and we need to get him down to around 20oz by a year.  Obviously we add more food to his diet.  However, is it easier to drop a bottle or gradually drop a few oz. from each bottle.

Does he always finish every bottle?  My DD stopped taking the last ounce in her bottle in the afternoon so I just dropped that one down to 3oz instead of 4.  I would probably just do that to all of the bottles and see how it goes.  Also, sometimes she skips her afternoon nursing session so I am thinking that will be the one I 'drop' first.  What are his habits like right now?

Currently we feed him a 6oz bottle & then food.  After talking to the pediatrician, she said to feed him as much food as he'll take & then give him the bottle.  He'll eat the food I send to daycare & drink his 6oz bottle, no problem.   I think occasionally (maybe once a week) his afternoon "snack" bottle he'll only drink 4 oz.  It seems to make sense to drop bottles (and probably that afternoon snack one first), but not sure if it's best to drop bottles or just reduce feeding amounts.

I asked the pedi this on Thursday when we were there for an ear infection.
She said he should be eating 34 times bottles or bf, max 6 oz each by one year. So, my LO is eating 5 times so we need to encourage him to drop one of his feedings by offering more solids.
It is weird to get used to him primarily eating food and not milk!
