Baby boy name help..kind of a long story

First of all I'd like to say I haven't been on here since the birth of my second daughter..19 months ago!  Having two under two was a busy time for me but we are expecting baby number three and found out it is a boy!  We are so excited but are having some name issues, or I am I should say.

DH has had the name Hayden Joseph picked out since before DD#1 was even born.  I guess I should explain that Hayden is his mother's maiden name.  When he mentioned it to me several years ago the whole Jayden, Breydon, Cayden name popularity wasn't as big and I had kind of liked the sound of Hayden..but as time has gone on I just don't love it.  I'm really liking the name Gavin Joseph (Joseph is DH's middle name).  Our girls are Leah and Audrey and I think it goes well, not overly popular but also not unheard of just like my girl's names.

Sorry this is so long but anyway what do you all prefer?  I have no where to ask an unbiased opinion!  Also, would you just bite your tongue and let your DH chose the name he's always wanted even if it doesn't sit well with you?  I feel bad going back on it now but after two girls I wasn't sure I'd ever have to worry about naming a boy anyway : )  Thanks for your input in advance!

I don't like Hayden but I appreciate the signifigance for him. What about Joseph Hayden? I don't love Gavin.

What about finding a first name that means something to you both? I wouldn't use a name I didn't love, but I wouldn't expect my DH to either. You have to compromise and if that means scratching everything and starting fresh that's what you have to do.

I'm afraid if you go with Hayden, you'll always regret it--you have to love the name, too. And FWIW, I really prefer Gavin Joseph!

Thanks for the input!  Good point, I wasn't really thinking about how he would feel making me chose a name I didn't love.  Everyone has been suggestion Joseph Hayden but being Italian I have at least three Joseph's in my family and it just doesn't work for me, or my husband's last name at all.

It's hard because I feel like he is so set in this that every name I mention he doesn't even entertain the idea or can't picture it, I don't know.  I'm worried I've hurt his feelings because he hasn't wanted to talk about it much, but I guess we need to and start fresh like you said.  Hopefully I can get him to agree to that.

I'm not a fan of Gavin Joseph. Sorry. :(

I think that Hayden is a great MN. I like that it has meaning to your family. However, I would certainly choose a masculine FN. Hayden could go either way. GL!

Since Hayden has family significance, I would stick it in the middle name spot. Gavin Hayden, for example. Not the best flow with those two, but the family connection trumps flow for me.

I'm getting so big!

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

My nephews are Hayden Joseph and Gavin David. Hayden is 7 now and when he was first born I LOVED his name. Now I think that aside from the trendiness of the adens it has also gone to the girls. I like Gavin a lot better although I love both of my nephews equally:

My advice is to make sure that you are both on board with the name.  My DH campaigned really hard for our DS's name which he had loved since he was a kid.  I just wasn't in love with it.  Finally I agreed if I could choose the middle name.  The middle name I chose was so unpopular with everyone that I ended up switching it in the hospital to DH's middle name.

DH does feel bad and is very insistent that I get to pick the next name, I think we both wish we'd handled the naming process as more of a collaboration then a campaign for the names we each liked.  Also in the future I won't tell family and friends the name ahead of time lol.  Good luck, FWIW I like both of your choices Smile

I like Hayden because of the significance. I think Gavin is just as popular as Hayden. Either name is fine, but I would rather honor a family member than just pick a name.

I agree that both of you have to be on board. But how did you pick the girls names? In case you picked those yourself without much input from DH, I think he is entitled to his opinion this time around.

FWIW, I'd have Hayden as a MN as well, and start from scratch for the FN. Gavin is not my style.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I do think we may both regret it if we don't pick a name that we both love.

I have thought about Hayden as the middle name but its been difficult as most of the names I seem to like end in an "n" sound and then it just doesn't flow.  I'm not sure what other names DH likes, so maybe he can give me some other suggestions that would work better..if I can get him to at least talk about this, ha.

Our girls names were chosen simply because we liked the names, no family connection at all, which actually makes me shy away from naming this one with a family name.  I guess we have time to worry about it, but I like to be prepared and want the name picked out ahead of time!

I don't love Hayden or Gavin, TBH.

I do agree with PP-- move Hayden to the MN spot and don't agree to a name you don't love.  I think you should go back to the drawing board with the first name, sorry!

Hayden was on our girl list when we were picking out names for our son and were team green. I agree though - the Braden, Kaden trend is a turn off. I love Gavin!

What about Gavin Hayden?

Or Gavin Joseph?

I'm not a huge fan of Hayden, but I love the significance.  Could you use it as a MN?  I don't like Gavin.  I would go with Joseph Hayden.  I like it's really cute.

love Gavin Joseph!  I think the family significance of Hayden is great, but unfortunately I just think it is becoming more and more of a girl's name... that might be something to consider.

Gavin Joseph is the better choice. Both of these names are nice, solid, and will age well. I wouldn't mind Hayden in the MN spot, but definitely not for the FN.

I also am over the "Ayden/Aiden" names and at this point I know more girl Hayden's than boys, so that is it's other negative. I would however consider it for the mn stop if I was you. Gavin I don't love and find it pretty popular (at least in my state). How about

I tried telling DH today that there are more girls lately with the name Hayden than boys.  Gavin is not popular at all in my area, I actually have never met anyone with that name but I do like some of these other suggestions.

Unfortunately, several are names of close friend's children and others just don't work, like Miles for example, I love it but I have to be careful because our last name is also a commonly used word in the english language and it just wouldn't work.

I asked DH to look up some boy names and give me a list so that we can have a "healthy debate" he came back with three spots all filled with Hayden.  It wasn't a very productive discussion but I'll keep working on it.
