What happened?

DH has MFI issues and I'm considered to be a normal and fertile 32. Our retreival was last week and DH provided his best sperm sample ever with normal motility and count. They used ICSI and IMSI to fertilze my 21 mature eggs and 15 were growing perfectly on day three with no fragmention. By day five, only four made it to blast. 11 embryos stopped growing all at the same cell divide. What could cause this? My next doctor's appointment isn't for another 2 weeks.

Thanks for the insight.

By the way...if you're wondering I have moderate OHSS and it has been miserable. =(

*****Siggy Warning*****

Something similar happened with us though DH does not have MFI issues and my issues are tubal. We had 12 mature eggs, 10 fertilized with ICSI. All ten were looking pretty good on day 3, six of those looked great. And then by day 5 only one looked "okay" and two more were barely okay. We transferred all 3. I was devastated. None made it to freeze.

Our RE said we were probably looking at a sperm quality issue because its the egg that is in charge the first three days. On day 3 the sperm "wakes up" so typically when things are fine up until day 3 he said its usually the sperm to blame.

We ended up doing a DNA fragmentation test on DH's sperm. His regular SA's have always been great but apparently you can have high levels of DNA fragmentation and have a normal SA so we went ahead and did the test after our transfer. We just got the results back and they were excellent. I haven't discussed them with our RE just yet but I'm perplexed to say the least.

My only conclusion is that sometimes there is just no explanation. I'm curious to hear what your doctor has to say as well as my own. He was convinced it was a sperm issue, and who knows maybe it was, maybe it was just a bad day. I don't really know how that works.

I wish you the best!

Thanks for sharing. I'll let you know what my doctor has to say. Hopefully, my transfer will be as successful as yours. =)

Take care!

I had never heard this explanation before, thanks for sharing LauraKat!

My RE does DNA frag tests on all IVF patients for exactly the reason Laurakat81 said - she said that they've found DNA fragmentation to be the cause of a lot of arrested growth problems. There was some weird thing they could do with ICSI to try to find better / non-fragmented sperm but I don't remember exactly what it was.

TTC #1 for Dh, #2 for me. HSG clear. Low AMH and endo. Multiple Clomid w/TI cycles - all BFNs. 2 IUIs with Clomid and 1 with Femara - more BFNs. IVF#1 25R, 15M, 15F. 5DT of two perfect 4AA blasts! Positive HPT at 5dp5dt. Beta #1 6dp5dt - 72. Beta #2 8dp5dt - 285. Beta #3 10dp5dt - 793. Both babies have strong beautiful heartbeats! Baby B miscarried at 7 weeks. Baby A is holding on through miscarrying her twin, sub-chorionic hematoma, and complete placenta previa. Stick, baby, stick!
