Low Amniotic Fluid

So, I had an ultrasound this morning and have only been home about an hour before the doctors office called me with the results. My AF is low and they want to do a C-Section Weds. if there's any openings at the hospital. (My doctor is on call that day otherwise it could be Friday when she works OR.) But, since I had a specialist an hour and half away for my last pregnancy (that my dr has been keeping in touch with throughout this whole pregnancy) if they say that they recommend I go out there and deliver then I'll be going there instead.

They told me to just relax and drink lots of fluids and not to do anything else right now. It's just a waiting game until they call and tell me when they plan on doing it.

I'm kind of nervous even though I've already been through this! :/ But, I'm not telling anyone else that!

I just had a question about low amniotic fluid and maybe you are the person that could answer this question. Did you "leak" a lot more or did you not know that it was low until you went in for your ultrasound? Lately my dis-charge has been more watery then normal so I was thinking of the fluid (TMI I know). Just wanted to hear what you have to say.

Thanks!

Yikes! That is definitely a scary phone call to receive.  Why didn't they tell you at your u/s that your fluid level was low?  Ditto PP's question about what the number was... I have been monitored for the past 3 weeks for a low AFI. My first level was 7 then 6.  They said I would be induced at 5.  GL to you!! Try to rest when you get a chance and drink up!

She said 6.7 at the Ultrasound but she was talking to the tech. My husband asked her if that was low and she tweaked and was like "Well, that isn't for me to say! The doctor can only tell you."

The u/s techs up here are discouraged from saying anything to patients until the doctor has reviewed the results.

And, no I haven't noticed anything different. But, when I was induced for my son for Low AF I didn't notice anything either.

My numbers at my last BPP were 13.3 and that was about 2 weeks ago.

They aren't scheduling the C-section until Friday. Until then it's just pumping my system with fluids and relaxing.

My doctor said mine were low to. But they are not worried just yet. Only if it continues to go down. Right now it's an 8.. It went up to an 11 last week and now it's back down to an 8.

Good luck with your c-section!

I think if it goes lower than 5 then they have to do an emergency c-s. But, I'm not there yet.

How far along are you?

To be honest, I am kinda surprised they are jumping right to scheduling the c-section.  Mine was low on a BPP once but they re-checked a few days later and it was normal.  The levels can fluctuate quite a bit.  But, having said that, I would trust your doctor.  Only they know your specific situation.

36 weeks, We have a plan to induce at 39 weeks, for other reason's. Of course if my fluid levels continue to go down then they will talk about inducing earlier. But as for now the plan is still 39 weeks and to drink lots of water. I get two NST's a week at my high risk doctors office. A check up at my regular OB's office and a BPP ultrasound at the highrisk place. Also doing a lot of kick counts and making sure baby is active enough.

I'm not sure if that's a ? For me if you're using bump mobile you can't see the ticker. I'm almost 40 weeks now. I was measuring small so the doc ordered an u/s at 37 weeks.

My first afi was 7. They ordered another u/s 2 days later. It was 6. Then another u/s 2 days layer. It was 8. Since then I've had 3 bpp's and an nst. I have weekly biophysicals and my levels have yet to be above 10. Still, they are closely monitoring me and baby is growing so they want him/her to stay in at least til my edd. Then we will talk induction.

FWIW, the doc said 5 or below would mean bedrest and iv fluids and likely induction as long as baby looks okay on monitors. This group hesitates to go straight to c/s even with low afi.

Every doctor has a different opinion on this.  At 36 weeks mine was around 7.  The doctor at the u/s facility said that was low, but my doctor wasn't concerned.  She said to increase my fluids but that I could still teach my aerobic classes (5X/week) and that rest wouldn't do much to help.  The next week I had another u/s (I had GD) and my number was up to over 8 and held there for the next week as well.  I ended up going to labor at 38w5d.
