What's in your anti-constipation arsenal? Possibly TMI!

Having lived a life where I've always had pretty loose stool, this whole constipation thing has been a real challenge for me since getting pregnant.  I see I'm not the only one!  Obviously, one of the worst things about it is that by the time you realize you're constipated, it's too late to do anything to immediately remedy the situation (short of suppositories).  Bah.

So I'm thinking of trying to outsmart my digestive system with a foolproof anti-constipation program.  My newest addition to said program is ground flax seed on my morning Mini Wheats (2.2 grams of fiber per tbsp in addition to a ton of omega-3 fatty acids, and I hardly notice it's there - most excellent!).

I'm even contemplating taking a precautionary stool softener pill or two each week just to make sure there are no serious back-ups that become painful to pass, as I live in fear that my stool is going to get even more compacted if I don't stay on top of things.  My absolute last resort in my anti-constipation kit is Metamucil.  The no-name variation I picked-up is really nasty though, and I'm lucky if I can get through a whole glass of it without gagging!

I really thought I'd progressed beyond this constipation garbage several weeks ago, but since it's now back with a vengeance, I'd love to hear what everyone else employs to stay regular(ish) and avoid those hang-on-to-the-edge-of-the-sink BMs?

My arsenal consists of:

1/2 cup of beans every day in at least one meal.

Tons of water.

1 prune and/or a 1/2 glass of prune juice every day.

Fresh fruit and veggies all day, every day.

Oh I feel for ya.  Constipation is the worst feeling!  I swear by Activia.  I've been eating it for years, everyday.  I also eat whole grain cereals, like Cheerios or Total and that helps a lot.  GOOD LUCK!

I kept trying stuff (colace, metamucil, fiber, etc) and you know what finally worked? Drinking cranberry juice. lol. Cran-Apple, Cran-Grape ... anything as long as it's 100% juice.

Who knew.

It might sound silly but I have put myself on a schedule to go and I sit there and read a book until it happens, also as soon as you need to go, go don't wait. I also drink 10 cups of water eat a pile of fruit and lots of fibre. It was really bad for while, but since doing this it has gotten a lot better.

Lots of water, fruit, whole grains and fiber.  Coffee gets things moving for me, too.

Apart from the few days after DS was born, I have never been constipated during pregnancy.

If you get constipated, use Colace to soften your stool.  Personally, it took until day 6 after DS was born before I pooped, not sure when I started taking the Colace.  This time I plan to take it right away, just to be on the safe side.

Fiber One or Fiber Plus cereal every morning (as high of a fiber content as I can get and they really are yummy).  Plus whole fruit/veggies and lots of water.

Fiber gummies, WHAT?!  I went looking for something in pill format to replace the nasty Metamucil substitute we have, but that was in the grocery store.  Clearly I'm going to have to hit-up the drug store, too!

Water (I try to drink 12-16 cups a day), apples, and a maximum strength dose of Colace every day. And even then it's unpleasant but at least I can go.

Thankfully this hasn't been too bad of an issue for me, but I've heard that apple juice works wonders.

Hah, great minds think alike!  This used to work for me...  a dose of greasy fast food seemed to lubricate things pretty well and provided some much-needed "force".  Didn't work for me this weekend though, which is doubly disappointing since it always used to be a great excuse to eat garbage!

I love hearing what works for different people.  I think water/liquids during pregnancy are seriously underestimated as well.  No more loose, wet stools must = not enough liquids in diet, right?

Add Taco Bell to the list.

I've been having really good luck with off-brand Metamucil capsules. My dad used to take the powder every day, and it always grossed me out so much that I went straight for the capsules when I thought I needed it. The bottle I bought has a very broad dosage recommendation, so I played around with the dosage until it was working the way I wanted it to.
