No Carb IVF Diet

So my RE's protocol for anyone doing IVF that has PCOS is a no carb diet starting on the start of the birth control pills and to continue until a +hpt. I know I am not going to starve but I am soooo hungry all the time. I am trying to eat alot of meats, veggies, eggs, and only drink water but I feel so nauseated the majority of the time. I have lost 6 lbs since last Monday, my BMI is 21.6 now, what is a good bmi for IVF? Anyone else on a protocol like this? I keep telling myself that I am sticking to this because we want a baby every time I see a cookie. Thanks in advance for your input! :-)

I have never heard of being on a diet like this while doing your IVF cycle. Hopefully your body will adjust and you won't feel so hungry. I don't think I could ever cut out carbs completely. Everything in moderation, or at leat that's what I try to tell myself. Good Luck!!!!

I don't have PCOS, but I've done the paleo diet for the most part for awhile (which is very similar).  For IVF, my understanding is they want you in the "normal range," which is 18.5 to 24.9.  If you've lost that much weight that fast, and you're already in the "normal" BMI range, you probably need to eat more.  Find some healthy but higher cal items, like avocados or nuts.  On a low carb diet, you'll burn more calories per day, so you'll have to get used to eating more.  Also, the weight loss will taper off after the first few weeks.  You'll just have to play with the calorie intake until you start leveling out.  Good luck!

TTC #1 7/10, Me (31)- Dx DOR (AMH 0.6); DH (30)- normal
BFP on Cycle #8. Natural M/C at ~8 weeks
IUI #1 and #2 (8/12, 9/12)- 50 mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFNs

I think my problem is I am not eating enough and maybe that is why I feel so bad all the time, like no energy at all.

this is insane.  try doing low GI. you can eat like a normal person then. So basically once you get pregnant and eat 'normally' again, you will gain back all that weight and then some? this is weird, really really weird.

hoping&praying2013:
I think my problem is I am not eating enough and maybe that is why I feel so bad all the time, like no energy at all.

When I'm not cycling, I'm generally doing the Atkins diet and with that you should eat until you're full (but not overly full) and eat whenever you're hungry.  I believe the rule is that you shouldn't go more than 3-4 hours without eating something during waking hours.  Your body processes the food more quickly because it doesn't have to process it as much.  As baker said, make sure you eat some fattier foods too, like avocado and nuts, as the fat will help fill you up.

Also, look into things you can make with cauliflower - faux mashed potatoes, faux popcorn, faux rice, etc... it can help to have things similar to the more carby food you're used to.  Also, spaghetti using spaghetti squash is really good.

My RE's protocol is no dieting during your cycle - just healthy eating - so I'm surprised they have you dieting, but I also don't have PCOS so maybe the diet will help with that.

Good luck!!

I'm working with a nutritionist (separate from our IF stuff) and have been doing restricted carbs since May/June.  For me the key was to make sure I get enough protein- I never used to.  I added in whey protein twice a day and it made a huge difference.  I've maintained it for almost 8 months and I don't feel like I'm missing anything.  PM me if you want more info on it.

Thank you all for your responses. I definitely feel like my body is being deprived and I want to feel healthy when I am trying to have a baby. I am taking a prenatal everyday so maybe that's making up for what I am not getting. I am seriously just thinking of eating limited carbs instead because I do feel like I am getting very unhealthy with this approach.

I'm a little late to the party, but wanted to add that I've been eating a low-carb Primal diet (similar to Paleo with some foods not allowed for strict Paleo folks) for several years.  It took a while for me to figure out that I really needed to make sure the bulk of my calories came from fat and not protein.  Too much protein and very little fat will make you feel sick.  Fat is totally your friend.  You'll feel full for a longer time and you won't gain weight unless you're eating too many total calories for your level of activity.

What kind of foods do you eat on it?

I eat meat, whole eggs, full-fat dairy (especially cheeses and Greek yogurt), oily fish, nuts, veggies with butter/oil, and limited amounts of whatever fruit is in season.  I usually have red meat or dark meat (like chicken thighs) and will occasionally have some white meat (turkey cutlets, chicken breast).  Salads dressed with olive oil and veggies sautéed in butter or oil are great ways to get more fat and lots of vitamins.

I really like these websites for general info and/or recipes:

 http://eatingacademy.com/

 http://www.marksdailyapple.com/

 http://wellnessmama.com/

I have lean PCOS too but no IR, and I have never felt as good as I have since doing low carb, high fat.  Cleared up my skin too!

Thanks for all the info!! I will definitely check out those sites. Because I end up feeling like I eat the same thing all the time. I think I will take this approach to eating, it seems way healthier. I was 167 when I originally went to the RE years ago and with the help of Metformin and Synthroid (hypothyroidism) and eating better I lost 37 lbs.
