blood preg. test

If you get a positive urine pregnancy test at a clinic, is it normal for them to have you also do a blood pregnancy test?

My OB said he generally does not do blood tests unless the patient has had prior losses. It's not standard in my neck of the woods.

TTC since October 2011.
DX with Non-IR PCOS in October 2012.
Missing RIGHT tube due to a prior surgery to remove cyst-zilla (40 lbs!) at age 12.
HSG showed tube was blocked - cleared by dye. DON'T DO CLOMID WITHOUT AN HSG!
Cycle #8 with 50mg Clomid & TI = BFN
Cycle #9 with 50mg Clomid & TI = No response.
Cycle #10 with Clomid 100mg + Ovidrel shot = BFN
Cycle #11 is a break cycle. Cycle #12 is a break cycle. (The break so nice, she did it twice!)

This.   My doctor didn't give me a blood or urine test, just a cervical check.

My OBGYN just does a urine test (unless there is a history of loss, like CLE said) but my RE does beta's after a positive home test and after IUI's.

TTC#2 Since July 2011
Me: 29, had two blocked tubes - left was cleared during lap&dye, right was unable to be cleared. PCOS & Stage 2 Endo. DH: 31, SA = perfect.
CLOMID: 4 rounds, 50mg + TI = BFN's.
FEMARA: 1 round = no response.
12-24-2012 : Laparoscopy, Softball sized cyst/endo/scar tissue removed.
Cycle #14 - Feb 2013 : 50mg clomid. Ovidrel Trigger. IUI on 2/14/13 = thin lining, multiple cysts.
Cycle #15 - no meds, still have cysts, no follicles. Boo!
Forced break. Continuous BCP for 6 weeks to give my jacked up ovaries a break.
Cycle #16 actively trying: May/June plan: Femara, Ovidrel Trigger, IUI! Bring iiiiit!

TTC #1 since August 2011
September 2012: Start IF testing
DH: SA is good
Me: CD 3 blood work is good, HSG all clear, 7 DPO blood work shows low progesterone
October 2012: Clomid + IUI = BFN
December 2012: Consultation with RE#1. Not impressed with RE#1.
January 2013: Consultation with RE#2
January 2013: CF screening shows that I am a carrier of CF. Thankfully, DH's screening shows that he is not a carrier of CF. Sperm antibody tests are negative for both of us. According to our RE we are Unexplained IF
March 2013: Post coital tests show possible hostile CM. So, maybe not so unexplained?
April 2013: Unmedicated IUI after yet another bad bad PCT. = BFN
Cultures find a bacterial infection that could harm fertility, DH and I both start antibiotics.
May 2013: Clomid + Trigger + IUI

my first pg I went to my PCP to confirm it. She ran a single beta after urine confirmation, but she also ran a full panel of blood work to see vitamin levels and such. I was like 5w though so there was no need for repeats since the numbers were good

Now i get repeat betas due to loss history upon a BFP, as early as possible

When I got a + HPT with DD, I called my OB's office and they had me come in for blood work to confirm... but that is standard for their practice. Once that came back positive, I was able to schedule my 1st appt.

No it's not typically normal unless you've had losses or are experiencing some symptoms if a loss bleeding, etc. .

My OB does blood tes after urine test for confirmation.  I have had problems in the past . So I have to get betas done right away and follow -ups to make sure the number are raising right.

Good Luck.

When I went in for DS the just did a pee test. Once my OB got the results I had blood draws every 4 days to make sure my levels were rising steadily. We had trouble getting pregnant though so this might not be the norm if you had no problems conceiving and no miscarriages.
