Measuring 4 weeks more!!!

I went into the doctor today, I was really sore on my right side, it was only the walk in doctor and he was shocked that I was only 16 weeks cause he said that I am measuring at least 20 weeks. OMG! This is my first baby so I have nothing to compare to at all. I am a little surprised cause I thought I knew my cycle better but maybe I didn't.

He asked if my last period I thought was a period was weird, I said yeah it was light and not very long at all. I get my ultra sound now 4 weeks early so I get it in 3 weeks now, but did anyone else measure bigger and find out you were further along than you thought? Or is it just a really big baby?

My friend thinks its twins since we knew someone that had this too and it turned out to be two babies, and her doctor only heard one heart beat but they were just beating at the same time.

Will the U/S in 3 weeks be your first?  They didn't do one to date pregnancy early on?

I don't have experience with it personally but I know several people whose uterus always measured larger throughout pregnancy but they were no farther along than they thought.

How was it determined that you are measuring bigger? Fundal height? It's really weird to do fundal height as early as 16w. I wouldn't think anything of it.

FWIW I did measure big with my first, a little bit. They did a growth u/s around 34 weeks and it was determined I had a little more amniotic fluid than the norm and a slightly larger than average baby.

If I had not had a cyst, I would not have had an US until my 20 one which is on the 31st. It's not necessary just to date the pregnancy. OP I would wait to see what your US shows before you get too excited, although it sounds like you might be further along.

exactly. I was measuring 2 weeks "ahead" just going by fundal height, but I had just had an u/s and everything looked right on target

No in Canada you only get one if you know your date of last period. Unless you don't know they don't do one to calculate your due date, or are having complications they will do more as needed but we just get one at 20 weeks and that is all. He was measuring the fundal height, it is way above my belly button, he said normally it is about 2-3 inches below your belly button at 16 weeks.

I was going to say the same thing - In canada, you don't get an early u/s unless you do not know your LMP.

But normally Dr's don't start measuring fundal height until about 20 weeks. Your uterus may just sit higher or something. But, given all of this, ya 4 weeks is quite the jump!

PP, with my first I got one u/s only at 20 weeks.  This time bc of 2IF I got several in the beginning.

OP, anything is possible. Good luck with the u/s but keep in mind early u/s are much more accurate in predicting due date. That said, I've been consistently measuring 4-5 days ahead of when my ovulation date predicts, closer to my lmp. Good luck!

I measure 3 weeks larger than I really am due to fibroids.  Do you know if you have any of those?  They get pretty big when you're pregnant and can make you larger than you would normally measure.

This isn't true. I am in Canada. I had one early on and I knew my LMP exactly. I was charting so I actually knew more than many as to when I would have conceived.

My sister knew hers and had a few as well.

How would anyone in Canada have the NT if they didn't have an ultrasound at around 12 weeks.

This is misinformation. In Canada you do not only have one ultrasound. How could any of us have had the NT (IPS) if we didn't have an ultrasound before 20 weeks?

As I mentioned I knew my LMP and I was charting so I was aware of ovulation date as well. I still had an early one for dating. I would have had one at the NT and then another at 18 weeks. My doctor doesn't wait until 20 weeks.

After a few issues I did have additional but without those issues I would have had  minimum 3. MY sister who just had a baby several months ago had no issues and had several.

I don't know anyone who had one.

I am in Canada too. You must be in Ontario. Certain provinces do not allow NT scans if you are young & have no history of DS in your family. I did not have an NT scan. This is simply because there isn't enough techs who know how to do this, nor enough machines.

The majority of canadians in my province do not get early U/S even if they know their LMP because of long wait times and its just not necessary if have no history of MC or anything else. I happened to get an early u/s because I have an awesome Midwife who sent in a request just for the heck of it. When I got there, the tech side eyed me for being there even though I had no real reason to be.

The anatomy scan is done between 18-20 weeks, it just depends on when they can fit you in.

All provinces differ.

With my first pregnancy I always measured at least a couple weeks farther along even though they had ultrasound dated the pregnancy. He wasn't a small baby (born at 38 weeks at 8lbs 13oz) but he wasn't overly large and I didn't have GD. I think my uterus just enlarges a bit more than the average.

I'm in Canada, knew exactly the day I last ovulated but they still gave me a dating ultrasound at around 7-8 weeks. I didn't ask for it and there was no reason get it as it was my first pregnancy. Also, I had a 14 week Ultrasound for IPS screening (which is pretty routine) and then had my 20 week anatomy ultrasound.

refer to my explanation above. it's not the same in all provinces.

I am in BC and I don't know about the scans I just know that Because I knew my LMP I get on and it is between 2024 weeks, unless there is a reason for needing more. ie. bleeding, cramping, slow heart beat, two heart beats, and complications. But we get one and we have to book ahead at Least 1012 weeks to get an appt. it's just the way it goes here. I don't know how they do the scans they must have another way, I chose to not have any of them done. My personal choice. Medical insurance only covers one ultra sound. You can go to private clinics and pay for additional ones but they too are very full and you have to book way ahead of time.

you're right, in BC you only really get an anatomy scan between 18-20 weeks. You won't get the option for an NT scan unless you are over 35 and/or have a history of DS in your family and you don't get an early u/s unless you have a nice dr who will send you for one OR you have a history or MC, or any other risk.

But you're wrong about medical only covering ONE u/s - they cover them all :) the beauty of living in Canada!!

This happened to me. At my 12 week and today at my 16 week appointment my uterus has been felt much bigger and higher than you would expect. When they do an u/s my little boy is right on track to where I thought he should be. The midwife is not concerned at all, saying he might just be having a bit of a growth spurt. She guesses that it will slow down growing in the coming weeks and sorta "catch up" to where you would expect it to be.
