Embarassed to Ask But....Is there a book for newborn stuff

So I'm actually embarrassed to ask this question because I feel like an idiot and well....at 13 year old. I've never grown up around babies (even to this day at 23 years old, I  have had about 20 minutes of baby time) and I dont really have a mother or "good friend with kids" figure to go to: so I have no idea what to expect.

So, finally, my question is: Is there a book for the "basic" stuff for what to expect when you bring home a baby?

To give you an example of what I'm talking about: I've heard off and on that newborn babies have tar like poo at first. I don't know why, I don't know how long to expect it, etc etc.  If there is something out there to prepare me, that'd be  nice so I don't have to have a panic attack for everything I don't know about lol

*shy's away from computer, awaiting either hateful or helpful posts....Confused*

I've heard good things about the Mayo Clinic Guide to Your Baby's First Year.  It seems pretty thorough with lots of straightforward information about what to do.  =)

I dont have much experience either. I have a bunch of nieces and nephews but somehow never changed a diaper!
Im planning on going to some classes about the basics and also breastfeeding.
Another thing i was planning on doing was learning infant and toddler cpr. Just in case im alone and the baby chokes. I want to be prepared. Something to think about.
My hospital offers these classes. Not too pricey for what youll learn.
Sorry i dont have any book ideas.

Baby 411 is pretty good.  Basic overview of all the important stuff without the lengthy excess junk like the what to expect book.

You'll be fine! What to Expect: The First Year is a great book (as others have suggested). In the hospital they'll teach you how to clean, change and give you some basic tips on cleaning. They won't send you into "battle" unarmed. Wink

Also, the only thing I learned the hard way was to make sure the neck folds are cleaned with wet wipes or a wash cloth after every feeding. If you don't then they get "neck cheese" and its really gross. Other than that its the usual! Poop, pee and spit up!

The other ladies gave you some great suggestions....To add to them, maybe try lurking on the 0 to 3 month board here. That might help some. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions at the hospital don't hesitate to ask the pediatrician.

There is a book called the pregnancy bible and it was one of the best books ive ever owned and had good pictures. Its expensive, around 4550 dollars. But it was so worth it i bought it twice with both of my first two pregnancy. Great info for after baby too.

I would see if your hospital offers a "Taking Care of Baby" class, or something along those lines.  I had absolutely no experience with babies, until I had one, so I really needed schooling!  These classes are great because they usually offer an infant CPR course with it. This is nice for piece of mind.

As for books, I bought Baby Care- Everything You Need to Know. It was nice because it has lots of colored pictures! :)

But really, I loved the classes offered. I took every.single.one. Breastfeeding class, Transition into Motherhood, Taking Care of Baby, Labor Prep.  I really got a lot out of them and they were totally worth the time.

I got "The Baby Book" by Dr Sears and love it.

I also recommend "Happiest Baby on the Block" (HIGHLY recommend) for sleeping/nighttime stuff. It saved our sanity. :)

I second checking out parenting classes in your area.  There's a place here that offers free classes where you actually earn credit to shop in their boutique.  It's called Earn While You Learn and has basic classes like breastfeeding, diapering, baby CPR, first aid, etc.  I know a lot of this stuff from being a full time nanny and having a ton of nieces, nephews, and little baby cousins but I liked the idea of getting to shop for cute baby stuff while getting a refresher.  :)

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

I also liked the Baby Book by Dr. Sears...although it can be a bit guilt inducing. Just enjoy the information and the activity ideas. Don't worry about the 'you should only do it this way' parts.

After about 6 months I no longer really had time to read more than a few pages, so I started winging it.

If you are near Publix stores and register for the baby club they send you a free book from the American Association of Pediatrics and a bunch of coupons. It goes up to age five and has developmental checklists for each time frame, how to recognize different illnesses and basic baby care. I'm also picking up happiest baby on the block and probably the Dr Sears book as well.

The previous posters have all suggested good books. I also second looking into an infant care class at your local hospital. When you deliver the baby, the nurses will also teach you all of the "basics". Feeding, changing, cleaning, and safe sleep. They'll also give you loads of literature in the hospital. When you select a pediatrician (usually in your 3rd trimester), they will likely have a packet of information as well. As far as the tarry poop, the technical term is Meconium and it's the baby's very first bowel movement. It's usually very sticky and very large. Sometimes it even happens in utero. Their poop continues to have a sticky, tarry texture for a day or so, but as they get more breastmilk/formula in their system it starts transitioning to regular newborn poop. It's just the first stage of many times you'll see baby's poop change texture/consistency/amount as you go from breastmilk to maybe formula to baby purees to solid foods :) All part of the joy of parenting :) Don't stress over any of "learning" to much, you will get a crash course as soon as that baby is home and you'll catch on super quickly!

Don't be embarassed :) Every mom is a first time mom at some point, none of us know what to expect, I worked infant rooms in daycares and still had a learning curve!

I'd also join your birth month board here and hang around. Having 100 moms all going through the stages you are to ask questions or just an "is this normal??" can be super helpful and reassuring :)

I loved the book Baby411, and then Toddler411.  They are written by the same people (and a doctor as well) that wrote Baby Bargains.  I still refer to my Toddler411 book for my son whenever he has a symptom that I am unsure of, and when I'm trying to figure out if I need to call his pediatrician.

And just an FYI:  the tar-like poo is meconium, and only lasts the first couple of days, then once they start digesting their breast milk or formula, the poops change.

Don't feel bad at all, lots of people walk into motherhood with no prior baby experience, which is why there are books and websites, mother's groups, and many other resources.
