I thought I was done with shots

I went in today for my 33 weeker, and I had a new doctor (it's a group practice so I see a bunch of different docs.) He sprung on me that I should get a tetanus/whooping cough shot. At this point, after being pushed into getting the flu shot a few weeks ago, I was like, whatever, just do it.

My arm is KILLING ME! Stupid shots.

Did anyone else get this shot? It took me completely by surprise. Granted, I was due for a tetanus booster.

Yup, it's recommended by the CDC right now that all pregnant women should get it. Currently there is a nation wide pertussis epidemic. There have been many deaths to it as well. Newborns can catch it very easily since they have little to no immune system. So the adults that surround a baby should all get the shot. That way they can't get pertussis and pass it on to the baby.

My husband and I will receive the shot in the hospital after delivery. It's highly recommended, like the flu shot, as whooping cough is reappearing in the US. While just an annoying and painful cough for us, it could be deadly to a newborn.

I'll be getting it after delivery, in the hospital, as well.  I've contacted immediate family on both sides to make sure they have updated shots, as well.  Come to find out, my mom hasn't had one in over 10 years, so I'm glad I was the catalyst in her getting it again.

OP, I had read all the moms on here talking about getting it, but since I hadn't heard anything about an outbreak in our area, I was thinking of skipping this one (I HATE shots)...then I found out that my boss from my seasonal job (whom I was around every single day for over a month) had whooping cough..I had to be put on antibiotics as a preventative measure, and it was 3 or 4 weeks before I knew I was in the clear...so I definitely got it at my next OB appt and I recommend everyone else get it too! Try a heating pad on your arm..it helped the soreness in mine go away much quicker...you can also take Tylenol if the pain in bothersome

DH & I both got the Tdap shot a few weeks ago. Both of our arms were sore for 3-4 days but she injected us in weird spots.

It's on my list of things I need to do, my OB doesn't do it so I either have to drive 25 miles to my PCP to get it or just get it in the hospital. I don't think it hurts anything to wait until you're in the hospital so I might just wait.  DH got his last year so he's set, it's just me.

Lurker here. I got my TDAP shot about 6 weeks ago.  My doctor said that there was a new study released saying that the shot takes up to 6 weeks to fully produce antibodies in adults so they recommend that you get the shot at least 6 weeks prior to giving birth do that you are fully protected.  There is def an epidemic of whooping cough going around. :(

Is there a reason your husband is waiting to get it?  The vaccine takes 2 weeka to be effective, so you are exposing baby for 2 weeks for no reason..,

I got mine last week (30 weeks).  My arm was sore for a couple days, but nothing too bad. My friends 1. mo old (at the time in Oct) stopped breathing, had to be given CPR, and was in the hospital for a week with pertussis. I see zero reason to wait to get it.

Yes, I got it almost 3 years ago in the hospital after I had LO. I also had a mumps booster because they found I wasn't immune when doing bloodwork.  But I waited until after delivery for both.
