Can dogs sense when you're preggo?

I was at my sister's house (who is also pregnant) and her puppy would not leave my side. She just got the puppy, and she is not used to my scent yet, so it's not a loyalty thing. I ask because I'm allergic to dogs, and don't have much experience with them. I thought it was so cute she seemed torn between who to protect more, me or my sister. She growled at my BIL for even coming too near us. I always heard they can "smell fear", and was just wondering if this is one of their other super powers.

I definitely think they can. Our dog who used to more or less do his own thing, won't leave my wife's side anymore.

Disagree!!!

I dont have a dog! However when Im out every dog in america comes close to me and walk near me. Last Tuesday there was a great dan walking with its master down the street I spot him as I exited the car. DH commented on the dogs size as did I . I proceeded to walk across the street and this dog followed me with its eyes  and when a biker rode close he grawled.

My sisters dog is about 3 years old and she doesnt keep her out during company so the dog and I have never really met. On thanksiving my cousin and I ( both are pregnant) were at my dads( with other family members); the dog just returned from her walk, walks in the house and sat between my cousin and I . When one of us got up the dog would follow us and look back at the other person sitting on the couch.

I have 2 more experiences to give but I wont bore you. I can say that in my experience dogs protect you while your pregnant.

Or maybe they only protect girl babys I dont know

They definitely can. My dog is always glued to me while I am pregnant. She was glued to me when I was pregnant with DS, and is now glued to me again. Another reason I know this is when I was pregnant with my DS I went over to my aunt's house. My aunt has 5 dogs! All different breeds and sizes. Most of the time when I visited the dogs ignored me after the first half hour (get excited when I first get there then get bored with me). Well, when I visited while pregnant with DS ALL 5 dogs were glued to me the whole time I was there. Talk about irritating, lol. My relatives thought it was hilarious. Every time I had to pee or get up to do something I had 5 dogs follow my every step Indifferent

I do not know  if my dog realizes I am pregnant based on my body/hormone changes, but he definitely knows that something is up.  I have had  him for 10 years and though he has always been a sweetie, he has never been a lap dog. Now I can't peel him  off of me to save my life.

They don't sense it.  They smell it.  Just like some dogs can smell cancer or an attack of severe asthma coming on or changes in blood sugar for a diabetic some dogs can smell your change due to pregnancy.

Some dogs are obtuse ;-)

I volunteer at an animal shelter.  All summer long, I worked with the same ten dogs... my husband and I started trying the beginning of August, and I suspected it worked right away because the dogs' behavior changed.  Miraculously, the energetic and jumpy dogs were super calm and careful around me.  The dog I had bonded with most became very protective and frequently began licking my stomach. When the positive test confirmed it, I was even more aware of how the dogs changed...

One of the female dogs began nesting.  Every time I cleaned her cage, she would rearrange the blankets and toys and then nudge me to sit in it.  When I did, she would lay across my lap and look up at me.  A few of the other volunteers (who didn't know I was pregnant) reported her odd nesting behavior to the vet.  When he arrived and checked her, I was there.  He said, "She's definitely acting like she's pregnant... but, she's not."  So I had to tell him, "No, but I am! She's nesting for me!"

Maybe not every dog knows (new dogs at the shelter were still jump and bite risks, so I had to stop volunteering) but dogs that are familiar with you or are already in-tune to someone who is pregnant probably know.

DH and I both think that our dog knew before we did.  About a week or so before our BFP, our dog started being really clingy and protective of me.  She was at my side constantly, which is not normal.  My husband and I both noticed it.  Then we got the BFP and it all made more sense.  The dog still will not leave me alone and has even pulled her bed from my DH's side of the bed to my side.  It is bizarre, and I wouldn't have believe it if I didn't experience it, but I certainly believe that dogs can sense pregnancy.

I think that my cats sense something too. I read somewhere (maybe on here?) a theory that they can hear the heartbeat and it's comforting to them. They've both been laying on my belly a lot... but maybe that's just because it's so soft and squishy these days...

I definitely think so! Back when I was pregnant with DS 1, I was asleep and all of a sudden the dog jumped up and started barking at me, completely out of character for him! I assumed he had to go pee really bad so when I stood up, my water broke! I still think he sensed it was happening. And when I'm pregnant is the only time he lays right up against me at night, any other time he sleeps away from us at the foot of the bed.

My dog goes nuts over tomato sauce, so I could only imagine one would know if you're Prego. Wink Seriously ladies, if you're old enough to be having a baby, you're old enough not to use words like prego, preggo, preggers, etc. ... It's pregnant.

This may seriously be my No. 1 pet peeve here, but hell every newscaster in the world used those cutesy words to announce Kate's pregnancy. I hate the dumbing down of the English language.

But to seriously answer your question, dogs can smell that something different is going on in there. Some become more loving, some a little more standoffish.

Holy heck, we're pregnant again! Please stay here with us little Otter.

We have a heartbeat! 138 beats per minute and measuring right on track. Ultrasound 11/7/12 showed heartbeat in the 160s. Negative MaterniT21 results ... Found out at Anatomy Scan we're Team Blue!

My dog has always been a Mama's Beagle. He's just attached to me so much more than my husband. However, after I became pregnant, he loves sitting between my legs with his head resting on my stomach. He can defiantely smell or sense something different. When my husband touches me in anyway (even something as simple as a backrub) Jake will put his head on my stomach as much as possible to help protect my stomach.

This!! Our cat has always done his own thing, never sat with us or on us, but since LO came into the picture, every time I sit down on the couch, he lays with his head on my stomach, like he's listening attentively. It's funny to watch his eyes get big when she kicks :)

I swear they do. Our friend has a German Shepherd who's a big fan of my husband. Soon after I found out I was pregnant the dog's behavior changed towards me. When I visit, he won't leave my side and when my husband tries to shoo him away, the dog does this terrifying snarl lol. All of a sudden, my husband has lost all the dog's loyalty. He's a little jealous haha

Wait... so I can't tell people my eggo is preggo??? yeah it annoys me too but I guess they just don't want to type out the whole word.... in verbal conversation that's a whole other story.

My dog knows, he's a little more cautious of visitors these days and he likes to sniff and snuggle his head against my tummy.

Yes. My vet said it is not unusual for dogs behavoir to change during pregnancy. IT has to do with being a pack animal. My female dog is especially protective of me when I am pregnant. She is always by my side. And after the baby is born she is protective of the baby, but once they are mobile she wants nothing to do with them until about 3 years old. It is a also pack thing.

I agree with this. I think the hormone must alter our smell at least a little. I mean, think about when you're ovulating you put out pheromones that even humans pick up on [albeit, subconsciously]. I would be surprised if there wasn't some sort of different smell for dogs to pick up on.

Yes, they can smell the hormone changes, particularly if they're already familiar with you.  A friend's dog is glued to my side whenever I'm there when before she would come over for attention when I first got there and would then wander off, and even their cat that normally avoids people will come sit by me.

My MIL's dog can.  She's a mini poodle named Roxie.

She's aging (11) and has HATED me since we met-for the past 5 years.  At first she barked/growled at me, and snapped at me.  After about a year she just completely ignored me, but would "visit" with other people while I was over.  God forbid I try to pet her or give her a treat (more snapping and barking).  MIL felt awful, but I just assume it's because I'm "new" to her.  This lasted until May of this year.

Anyway, DH and I visited when I was about 8 weeks or so.  We had already told family.  I sat down on the couch.  Roxie leapt out of MIL's lap and ran over to me.  She jumped on my lap and sniffed my stomach while wagging her tail happily.  She spent the rest of our visit (about 3 hours) curled on my lap and occaisionally licking my stomach.  It was the cutest thing.

She hasn't gone that far since, but when I first sit down she'll come over to me, sniff my stomach, and walk away.

Edit: she's 11 NOT 14

My dog doesn't give a sh*t. In her defense, she never really cares about anything...lol. I haven't noticed any change in behavior from before. I'm sure I smell different but that hasn't changed her behavior towards me at all.

My female lab has become my official chaperone...she follows me everywhere. If im upstairs shes right there with me. Even If i go take a shower she right by the door. I fell yesterday and she immediately came up to me sat down whimpering making sure i was ok. I few months ago my husband moved from texas to maryland to a new base and she became very protective since then. Any little noise shes growling and patroling the house. Once I made it to maryland and we settled in the new house she still patrols and will sleep at my feet in the living room. If im walking up or down the stairs shes right next to me and will stop and look at me if i stop. As for our male husky....hes more curious with all the baby stuff so hes always wanting to be in the babys room. I am having a little boy. :)

As for dogs (and cats also)--I think they can smell the changes in our body chemistry.  Whether or not they become more protective...I don't know.

I think for sure they can. I mean they can be trained to sense when someone who is diabetic is getting low on insulin and so they can probably smell that we smell different preggers. It was the same thing and has been the same thing with my brothers lab. She literally will not leave me alone, she even insists she comes into the bathroom with me when I am visiting there! Good grief! She always lays at my feet and she loved me before but now that I am preganant she is 10x more clingy. She is so goofy. Even my litle chihuaha sleeps with me and she normally sleeps wayyy under the covers by my feet but now she sleeps under my body pillow right next to my belly. So I think they know, they are smarter than we think.

Our vet said that dogs can tell you're pregnant before you can. And that it's very common for them to be more protective of you while you're expecting.

Our shih tzu has been hanging closer to me pretty much this entire pregnancy. The vet warned she could be more agressive towards people coming near me, but so far she's still her mellow self.
