Opinions please

What are thoughts about the boy name Jameson?

I happen to love it and it fits our need perfectly since my husband really wants to name a boy after his father (James) and love the name Jackson.  My concern is that everyone under the sun is going to say, "Like the whiskey!?" And that will tick me off! I'm a teacher and actually have two Jamesons in my class and I'lll admit, that was my first thought too before I got use to it and got to know them. Plus DHs cousin has a dog named Jameson that is named after the whiskey, so I feel like his family will find it appalling that we named our kid the same as a her dog.

My husband thinks I should care less about what other people think, but I also dont want to curse my kid with a name people are going to mock. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!

I have never heard of the whiskey Jameson. I'm Canadian though maybe it's not sold here? Anyways I think it's a nice name.

The associations wouldn't bother me, and the name seems like it's a good fit for your family. I prefer the name James, though.

It's a pretty well known Irish whiskey. Definitely sold in Canada, I bough DH a bottle last week for Xmas. It's the first thing that comes to mind for me for sure.

Use it if you love it, but people will think whiskey. Not everyone obviously, but I would guess a fair few people will. If that bothers you pick something else. Jackson James?

When I hear the name, I always think the parents must really like the whiskey. And even though I know I couple of cute Jamesons, that's still all I think.

I knew a Jameson and thought it was a great name!  At first, people may associate the whiskey but over time, they will associate your LO first.  He will be a hit in college too.  Haha!  I really like the name and I like how it would literally be James' son.  The dog thing wouldn't bother me.

I do like PP's comment about how it literally means "James' son." That's really cool!

That said, I think of two things: the whiskey and Jenna Jameson (porn star).

I think Jameson is both trendy (last name as a first name) and the name of a whiskey.

Not my style at all.

I'm a regular drinker of that whiskey and it wasn't the first thing I thought of. (Though it probably would be for a whiskey drinking guy.)  I like it and think it works well for your needs.

I don't automatically think whiskey, but I grew up with a Jameson and knew him long before I knew what brands of alcohol were called. I do like the sound of the name, even though I normally don't care for -son names.

This is my co-worker's #1 pick for a boy (if she has one) and she has similar reasoning to you (her dad's name is James).

I think if it has meaning to you, go for it.  Without knowing the back story, it sort of falls in to that category for me of naming your child a cool sounding last name that has no obvious connection to your family tree.  I am sure your immediate family would get it, but your friends and acquaintances and just random people you meet you might feel like you would have to "explain" the name to them (because of the whiskey connection).

Not a fan of having to explain my kid's name to people, KWIM?

i am a firm believer that you should go with your gut and not really put to much stock in others opinions.

but since you asked....i really really dislike the name Jameson. I think of whiskey, then dogs.  It would be cute on a boy but i just imagine a grown man hating it and wishing you just went with James.

which is a name i think is great! and james jackson has a very nice ring to it!

I've never heard of the whiskey,  so I wouldn't be bothered. Would you call him Jameson? Or shorten it to James? I love the name James, but I don't like the nn Jim, and I know a couple who named their son Jameson for this reason... that way they can call him James, and that's his nn, not Jim.

Good to know. I stay far away from whiskey so that's probably why I have never heard it.

I think of the porn star Jenna Jameson.  I don't know why, but this name has a downmarket appeal for me...no offense.

I'm not a drinker so I never have heard of the whiskey.  I like the name, a boy from my high school had that name and it fit him well.

As for the dog thing, don't sweat it.... my husband so badly wanted to name his first son after his father (Benjamin)...well there are a lot of Ben's in my family including my dog that died a few years ago.  If the name has meaning I wouldn't worry about it.

I love the name Jameson.  My husband's name, his deceased father's name and Jameson all mean the same thing.  Our next child, regardless of whether it is a boy or a girl will be named Jameson.  Don't worry about the whiskey thing.  If its a name you love, its a name you love!

I am not a drinker AT ALL but the first thing I thought of was the whiskey too. Given that you personally had that experience (your first reaction to hearing the name), I think it is safe to say that you will get that "like the whiskey?!" comment from most people and expect it. My advice to you is to either get used to it and be ready to deal with it, or pick another name if that will bother you too much.

FWIW, my last name is the name of a common liquor (spelled differently) and I got "like the drink?!" allllllll the time. I definitely was teased about it in school. It doesn't bother me anymore, but it did as a kid- and that was my last name! Just something to consider; I think that will be even worse if this is his first name.
