Q for Formula Feeding Moms and Constipation

I have struggled with breast-feeding for a few weeks now and am planning on starting my LO on formula since my supply simply does not match his demand (and I have tried absolutely everything to increase my supply short of meds).

I am nervous about starting him on formula though. From what I understand, formula can be very constipating, right? He’s coming up on 4 weeks old and I can’t imagine having a constipated 4 week old.

So, formula feeding moms, is this is an issue or not? If so, what do you do to remedy constipation in a very young infant? Are there certain brands of formula that are better than others when it comes to being gentle on a newborn’s system? Any other advice?

I am EFF my LO, and he did get a little bit consitpated in the beginning.  Our pedi reccommended dark Karo syrup (1 tsp, 2 x per day as needed), and we only had to give it to him once.  Worked like a charm (and quickly!) for us.

LO hasn't had any constipation issues so far.  We use enfamil.

This exactly. Works great every time!

My LO is 2 months & we've been using Similac Advance since he was 17 days old. We have not experienced any serious constipation issues.  My sister EBF & her son had terrible constipation problems.  So formula isn't necessarily the problem.

LO does go less often since switching to formula.  1-4 times per day instead of 4-8. He seems perfectly comfortable though.  Twice, he seemed to be having some trouble going.  We laid him on his back & massaged his tummy.  We moved his legs as if he were riding a bicycle.  We changed his position a lot, often holding him upright.  (The doctor pointed out you'd have a hard time pooing while laying on your back.  So do babies one times.). That worked.

This. She has been a pooping machine since day one. No problems here.

Im in the same boat as you Shema except my LO is 3 wks old! He has been having some of what we call "cranky gas" and has not been dirtying his diaper like when he was BF'ing(wetting his diaper more often i think now that he is FF'ed, weird). We are using Emfamil Newborn and he seems to do fine with eating it and burping good. I plan on calling his doc for advice and will share what she suggests!

Thank you so much for your responses, I feel so much better! Some questions:

-How do you administer the Karo syrup? Do you dilute it? How much and how often?

-Hickey2Alvarado: Are you going to exclusively FF too? It’s nice to have someone who’s going through the same thing. The past few weeks have been incredibly frustrating. I wanted to stick the EBF thing so badly but I also worry about hurting my LO b/c his diapers haven't been terribly wet and even his stools are more like smears. Do let me know what your peds have to say. I called my peds and they recommended giving water between feedings for constipation. That doesn’t sound right to me though...it would fill up LO’s tummy and might interfere with feeding I think.

I went through tons of difficulty with BFing LO for the first month. I wasn't making enough milk and tried everything known to man to increase besides meds. Nothing work so we started EFF around 1 month. We use Enfamil Newborn and have had absolutely no problems with constipation. LO poops 1-2x/day and burps just fine while eating.

Good luck to you! I know how hard it is to switch to FFing when you really wanted to BF but your LO will be just fine.  :)

I wanted to make every effort to BF for at minimum of 6 months (or when teeth started coming in, whatever came first!) but sadly, that won't happen. At the hospital, I thought that my boy and I were on the right track, but the more and more i tried to nurse him, the worse and worse the pain and stress became. After many many tears and to mental breakdowns, my hubby and I figured out that my body, while it was making milk, (without going into TMI) was not 'properly shaped' for LO to grab a hold of properly. So,at 5 days old, we decided to pump. Pumping was working great, Hubby fed LO while I pumped! I was getting 2 oz every easily in 25 mins (manual pump) every 2 hours. We fed formula at night so we could create a supply in the fridge. But three days ago my body suddenly stopped making milk and I freaked. We have no choice now but to go EFF. I am suffering from feelings of utter failure and feel like a 'bad' mom, but Im working thru it with my hubby (he is my rock, I couldn't do this without him!) At least LO got a good jump start, but not at all what I wanted! We are thinking that my production problems might be genetic, my mother did the same thing with my bro and I almost exactly to the minute!

My pedi told me to lube up a thermometer and 'stimulate' his rear as much as necessary. As long as he poops once a day and wets 6 times a day she said no worries. She said it will take about a week for his system to become normalized. Said to use gas drops if he is straining to fart and is unhappy. Suppository only if he hasn't pooped in 48 hours and a call to the doc. She didn't say anything about water, but as a rule, I have already been making the formula a bit more watery than the directions anyway. I wouldn't do just water feedings. She said as long as there is poop (even if its one of those 'wet farts', his body is trying) he is ok. She didnt say anything about Karo syrup.

Sorry for the long post but I hope it helps! Im learning too! HUGS

Ladies, I really appreciate you sharing your stories. I’ve felt so lonely through this painful experience but your stories sound so similar to mine. I put so much effort into trying to EBF. I also had the “body shape” issue you reference Hickey2Alvarado, and the LC at the hospital told me the baby would “grow into it”. So I endured painful latches. But it got to the point where it was clear that LO was also miserable and clearly not getting enough. I started pumping like crazy but I can barely even get 1 ounce sometimes! It varies.

DH is really pressuring me to give up the pumping. He thinks it’s not worth all the time and effort I’m putting into it for the small amount I’m getting out.

I’d been sticking to my guns until DH pointed out that every day that passes is one less day of LO’s infancy that I get to enjoy...that I’m losing minutes I could be spending with LO, “being hooked up to a machine”....

This hit me really hard. I am so scared letting go though. For example, I know that breastmilk gives the baby all sorts of extra immunity. I’m paranoid about getting through the winter months w/o breastfeeding/pumping for him and giving him that immunity. But I don’t know that I have a choice anymore...

Prunes!

But be careful as too how much! Or maybe apple juice. LO's doctor suggested both so I feel okay with giving her anything other than formula.
