when can I find out now?!

So I went for my ultrasound today and they did all babies measurements etc, everything looks great! (yay!) however, they couldn't tell the sex of the baby. His or her legs were crossed the entire time and they couldn't get a good read, so she said she didn't feel confident enough to say one way or another! We didn't find out with the first so i can't remember, when is the next ultrasound where I could find out?!

Yes I know but what I meant was, when is the next "typical" ultrasound (if any) in a normal pregnancy that they can look again. My first pregnancy we didn't find out but I also had a lot of complications so i had a TON of ultrasounds, I dont know what the normal ultrasounds are for a normal pregnancy (which this one has been).

There's a good chance you won't get another unless there's an issue. You could go to an elective ultrasound place.

it is usually determined between 18-20 weeks to be safe, although if the baby was cooperating you probably could of found out at your last appt. depending on your OB hopefully they will allow you to check again soon.

There isn't one.  Their job isn't to find out the sex of your baby, it's to make sure it's healthy.  If you want to find out you may have to go pay for an elective ultrasound.

Typically there isn't one. As PP said only if there is an issue. I had my last one at 33 weeks because I was measuring 2 weeks ahead.

You might want to look for elective ultrasound centers in your area.

My OB does an ultrasound at every visit for any pregnancy so I don't really know what the standard is.

You MIGHT also be able to request one with your Dr. Mine would most likely let me get one if I explained the situation, but a lot of dr's wont do one, since (as PP said) that's not part of the "deal", they just make sure it's healthy. If they wont let you get one scheduled, then just pay to get one done at another u/s place.

I had an u/s done on Sat at one of those little 3d/4d Boutique places, & they could clearly tell he's a boy. Luckily, baby was cooperating.

As far as when your OB will schedule another u/s, it really differs depending on the Dr.

Hoping you find out soon!!

As PP has said, it sounds like this was your A/S but your LO was not showing the goodies.  With a normal healthy pregnancy you probably will not get another sonogram unless medically necessary. Your insurance may also play a huge role in this.

Sounds like this was your anatomy scan, and for most normal pregnancies, that is the final one. Other ultrasounds after that tend to be only done when medically necessary. I'd start looking into an elective place if I were you.

I think every doctor is different but I got a 36 week ultrasound with my 2 previous pregnancies.  It is standard in their office.

This may be a stupid question... but aren't the genital parts part of the things they measure/examine in the anatomy scan, to make sure everything looks ok? I always thought they had some sort of diagnostic thing they had to determine at this stage for genitals. If they can't see them, I thought you were usually automatically rescheduled for another date, because they still needed some data?

This. It sounds like you just had the anatomy scan, correct? If so, it is most likely that you wont have another u/s before baby is born unless there is an emergency. And elective u/s seems like your best bet. Double check with your practice though since each one does things a little differently.

Is there a standard? From what I've read here over the past few months every OB is different. My OB does ultrasounds at almost every appointment, and I see her every 4 weeks now and it will change to every 2 weeks then weekly later in pregnancy.

No.  Examining the genitals is not part of an A/S.

To the OP, as your OB if he/she plans to do any more "routine" u/s.  Otherwise, you'll probably have to pay for one out of pocket somewhere.  Also keep in mind, the further along you get, the less room there is and the less chance they'll actually be able to get a good shot of that part of the baby.  I had a 30w u/s with DD and she was already big enough that they couldnt really get a clear shot of that area.  So even if your OB does standard late term u/s, there's no guarantee.  I'd just pay for one if I were you.
