Pacifiers

So my LO will be 3 months on the 18th and she has started to suck on her fingers. Until now we haven't had a need to give her a pacifier because she can soothe herself, but with her now sucking on her fingers should I give it to her? I don't want her to get attached to it though.

If she's sucking on her fingers, she doesn't need the pacifier.  It's better to let her soothe herself with her own hands rather than getting her dependent on a pacifier that you'll constantly be chasing down for her when she drops it or it falls out while she's sleeping.

I dont want her to suck on her fingers though cause it will be harder to break the habit when she is older.

This is why we started giving DS a nuk. He took a pacifier when he was a new born, but then stoppped taking it between 8 weeks and about 4 months, when he started sucking on his hands. So about 6 weeks ago we started giving him the nuk. it took about a week our so, but then he started to taking, and likes having it now. He will still suck on his hands but much less now.

We DO NOT give him the nuk at bedtime. He is able to self soothe and I don't want him to wake up because the nuk falls out and needs it to go back to sleep. i also figure that the nuk habit will be harder to break if we use it at night to sleep.

It's up to you. However, I don't really think you have much control over what your LO prefers. DS really would never take a pacifier. But once he started getting teeth he started sucking his thumb. We're still dealing with it now. Some kids are the opposite. Are you sure she is sucking to pacify herself or is she just hungry?

Honestly, I'd rather see a kid sucking a finger than the pacifier as a toddler. I sucked my thumb until I was in kindergarten and I am just fine (though I only sucked my thumb when I had my "silky" and my mom could manage where/when I had that).

Neither of my kids want anything to do with a pacifier but just recently DD1 has started chewing on a finger. I'm fairly certain it's because her molars are coming in, but either way I'm not sweating it. Your LO might not even continue to suck her fingers for more than a few months, so your worry would be pointless. I also think having to get up to replace a paci would be annoying all night long.

This is totally DS. He ONLY sucks his thumb when he has his "baby." Literally, as soon as it's in sight the thumb starts migrating to his mouth. The rule is it doesn't leave the house so that cuts down on the thumb sucking a lot. I just don't have the heart to take it away. I figure at some point something will happen to it or he will grow out of it and solve the problem.

My LO kind of liked a pacifier at first, but now he just spits it out.  He is trying so hard to get those fingers/thumbs in his mouth though.  Personally, I'd rather him self sooth with his thumb instead of worrying about a pacifier.  All babies are different so like another post said, they might only suck their thumbs for a few months.  You really can't know what will happen.

It's up to you if you give it to her, but I wouldn't worry about taking it away. If you do it at about one I think it's pretty easy because they aren't so attached to it. I let my family talk me out of doing it then and now he is very attached. I finally got him to leave it in the crib and convinced him it's only for sleeping...it's so much harder to get rid of now. But at 1 he wouldn't have cared for more than one day.

I totally agree with this!! I was a huge thumb sucker and I had a hard time breaking the habit!! I was prolly almost high school when I stopped.. You can't take the thumb away but u can take the paci away.

I took a pacifier when I was little, both my siblings sucked their thumbs.  I gave up the paci when I was 3.  My mom told me that I could have a party if I threw it away.  One night on the way home from day care a couple days after she told me I could have a party, I asked for the party.  I threw it away and never looked back.

My siblings didn't give up the thumb sucking until they were around 12, and they would do it in their sleep until much later.

This. My LO likes his pacifier (I like that). When it falls out of his mouth, he is in a deeper sleep, and he doesn't wake up. I guess I'm just lucky like that.

Also, there has been research that giving a pacifier when they sleep can help reduce SIDS (they think it's because when a baby sucks, they aren't as in a deeper sleep).

Bottom line, I really like pacifiers (and I'm glad my LO does too). If he starts to prefer his hands though, I'm not sure what I'd do....

You can take away a paci, you can't take away a thumb.... Thumb sucking is a terrible habit. I Did it when I was young. They say that pacifiers aren't a bad thing and also helps against SIDS, I've read. No kid goes to kindergarten with a paci. I have seen kids to go kindergarten thumb sucking tho! My daughter could take or leave the paci.

My daughter is one day older than yours.  she also sucks her hand/fingers/thumb... she doesn't care much for paci right now.  don't sweat it, it is developmental.  they are too little now to start stressing about what bad habits they will have in kindergarten.
