Question for BFmoms

LO is a month old and I am EBE. I have been tracking feedings time and number of feedings/day with an app. I feed on demand so my question is how many of you track your baby's feedings, what do you track and when will/did you stop tracking?

I'm just wondering if I still need to track so closely, even though I'm feeding on demand I still feel like a slave to the clock!

Why are you tracking them? When I EBF DS, I only tracked for the first 2 weeks. Then around 4 months I started tracking again so I could put him on a solid schedule.

I have an app on my iPhone and I track everything which helps me to see trends, patterns, and saves me from having to remember time.

With DS I tracked for the first week or two. This time around, I just feed on demand. Unless your LO isn't gaining weight I don't see the point in tracking everything.

I stopped tracking around 2 weeks. DD was already up past her birth weight, and I was feeding on demand, so I just didn't see the point. I SAH so right now there's not a lot going on for me outside of taking care of DD, but once she gets a bit older I may start tracking to get more a rough schedule down. Either way it wouldn't be the hard and fast tracking I did when she was first born.

DD gained slowly at first, so I tracked until the pedi approved her weight gain at 2 weeks.  I might start to track again when I try to instill a schedule, but at that point, I would track sleep more than feeding. We snuggle and nurse all day long so I don't need that to be on a set time or pattern.

My LO is 2 months old and I'm still tracking.  I'm not EBF though, he's also getting formula.  So I make note of that too.  I also track what he does for diaper changes.  Honestly, if I don't track I feel like I completely lose track of time and couldn't even tell you when he fed last. It also helps me to know that when he does start crying, he's probably hungry because the last time he ate was at whatever time was written down last.

I agree. As long as she has enough wet and dirty diapers I don't bother tracking anything.

This. As long as they're gaining fine, stop. It's one less thing to do and I always found tracking it to be stressful.

LO is almost 8 weeks and I am still tracking everything.  But he will be going to daycare in another month so I need to be able to tell them what to expect.  After that I probably will stop.

that and so DH has the same information as me when I'm unavailable.

I EBF and my LO is almost 5 wks. I still track. I keep a notebook and write down which side and for how long he nurses.  I also have a column for diaper changes.  I guess it's more for my sanity sake.  I like to be able to see how long he nurses for and how many hours/day he does.

If you are thinking about not tracking, you probably don't need to anymore.  I forget when I stopped...probably 2-3 weeks.  I just kind of got used to everything and would feed on demand.  I'm not big on forcing a schedule, I just noticed trends set by my LO and went with that.  We're 5 months in now and she's kind of gotten herself on her own schedule!

I think you're making more work for yourself by tracking feedings. When you get to know your LO more, you'll figure out when s/he is hungry and what a hungry cry is. Then you just feed them.

I was tracking my LO's formula feedings. He got one a day so that I could pump and freeze it. I tracked it just so I could try to match the same amount with the breast milk I was pumping, so that I wouldn't lose my supply. I now have a small supply in the freezer so that my DH and I can sometime have a date night or two.

THanks everyone for he advice. I think I may stop for awhile and just keep track of which side and diapers. For the last week or so I've found that rather than being reassuring the tracking was making feeding less enjoyable because I was worried about how much and trying to get in a certain amount of time rather than letting baby dictate. I think this might also have resulted in some pretty messy spit ups. I tried not tracking today after your advice and the feedings were so much more enjoyable and less stressful.

I tried tracking and I just got annoyed. If he had gone more than  hours I would know, if he had less than 5 wet/dirty diapers I would know. I gave up and now he is a little more regular with when he eats and sleeps so I dont need an app. But I did use the simulac one which I liked while I tracked.

I quit timing feedings a couple weeks in. I feed my LO when she's hungry and let her keep going either until both breast are soft and empty, or she passes out with at least one breast emptied. I figured as long as she's satisfied and gaining weight, then there is no need to time everything and stress yourself out.

This is exactly why I'm still tracking, and my little guy will be 3 months old on Friday!  I started doing it initially because he had lost a little weight the first week and his pediatrician wanted to know how often and how much he was eating, but I've continued because sometimes I just plain can't remember if it's been 2 or 3 hours since he last ate.
