RussianMommy:I just want to say that Hannukah has nothing to do with Christmas other than the fact that it's in the same month. It is a totally separate holiday for the Jewish ppl
isn't there still presents though?
ya but's not this big gift grabby thing like xmas is. ppl usually get small gifts, stocking stuffer type stuff. it's really a small holiday in jewish religion, it's just been "glorified" by western society.
Yeah, it totally sucks as a holiday. 8 days of socks. Yay. When I was around age 7 or 8, my parents started celebrating Xmas in addition to Hannukah, for the sake of my older brother and I. So we would have a tree (only rule, no angel ornaments and we had a wooden horse on top) and also light the Hannukah candles, we'd get 8 days of socks and crappy tasting chocolate coins, and then the real presents on Xmas.
For those that don't know, and along the lines of what Russian Momma was saying - while Xmas is of huge importance to Christians, religiously, Hannukah has relatively small religious significance. Hannukah importance and celebration has been blown up by Western culture so that Jewish families do not feel left out at Xmas time.
