Traveling by car

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and I have to go out of town next week and my family is worried about the long car ride. It's only a 6 hour ride. Does anyone know if long car rides are bad for you in the first trimester?

Thanks

Nothing wrong with the car ride I know quite a few that have taken long rides even much further along in pregnancy.

No, the car ride will do nothing to affect your pregnancy.

OMG, no! You are confined to your home and should never be more than 5 minutes from your delivery hospital the entire pregnancy!

Car rides are fine. Most OBs MWs will suggest stopping every 1.5-2 hours to walk around some (to prevent clots), but it you're anything like me I have to pee that often...

My OB told me the only concern with traveling is sitting for long periods, which can lead to blood clots. Apparently you are more prone to clots due to the hormones you are producing. So like a PP said get out and walk around every couple of hours. She also showed me some stretches and movements that can help prevent the clots, which are impossible for me to describe in text but you may be able to do a little internet searching and find them. Have fun on your trip!

My dr. told me to try and get out of the car to stretch every hour.

I travelled 12 hours when I was 7 months pregnant last time. I also walked around Washington for 6 hours straight.

I will have an 8hr drive when I will be about 10/11 weeks.  We are planing to stop every 1 1/2 to 2 hours for potty breaks for me and DD who is 5 yrs old.  Also planing to have small icechest with juice, water, yogurt, and other snacks to keep m/s from getting to bad.  I did a similar trip when I was pregers with DD 5 yrs before and it seemed to work with snacking and frequent stops to walk and potty breaks.  Does tack on about another hour to drive time, but worth it.

If you have morning (all-day) sickness or have been getting really bad headaches, I would worry. I couldn't be in a car for more than 30 minutes up until 20 weeks. I'd get soooo car sick I'd throw up for hours.

Actually my doctor said there are some risk to sitting still for long periods of time, she said to "fidgit" in the car, and get out every hr or so to walk around a bit....not a silly question

It's fine. Get your DH a book like what to expect to read and tell him to stop letting his imagination run wild.

Please forgive my typos! I'm not as dumb as my iphone would like you to believe :)

Go to the drug store and buy compression socks. They help circulation and prevent blood clots.
