Must-have toys for young infants? (0-6 months)

Any recommendations for toys for the tiny ones? It's a bit overwhelming. I am assuming noise makers like rattles, but what else?

My son is about 6 months old and his favorite toys are: jumperoo and an empty water bottle.  At this age, there is very little interest in toys....give them a few more months and they will start enjoying them more.

Balls with big holes so that they can grasp them. DD has the Baby Einstein Bendy Ball and likes it a lot. Other huge hits include anything crinkly, particularly little books and whatnot that have a loop so I can hang them from her playmat arch or the jumperoo.

My son loved some of the more simple toys when he was younger.  He had some key sets and a Bright Starts remote controller he got a lot of use out of.  He also has a Fisher Price ball with a bell and a monkey inside that he still loves.  The one toy we have been using since he was 2 months old was the Exersaucer.  We had this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Evenflo-ExerSaucer-Triple-Fun-Jungle/dp/B001H0GF10/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355325286&sr=8-1&keywords=evenflo+exersaucer

We are still using it.  It starts out as a play mat, and it grows with LO.  He LOVED the toys on it.  We also had this play mat:

http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Neptune-Ocean-Adventure/dp/B000TFGUC8/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1355325556&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+einstein+play+mat

But LO didn't like the toys as well and the classical music can be a bit much after an hour.

I spent way too much time and money buying toys for the first few months and DD did not care for many of them.  But here are some good choices

Playmat and usually they come with 4-10 separate toys

Chimey rattles to hang from carseat handles, etc

O-ball

Wubbanub paci (lifesaver in our house)

Lamaze toys like Freddie the Firefly or Mortimer the Moose, etc.

Cloth books with 3D elements

A lovie or taggie blanket

A couple of teethers, Sophie being the perennial favorite (DD was not a huge fan though).

Some bath toys like ducks, stacking cups, Boon water toys, etc.

Tiny Love Sunny Stroller Arch

that take-a-long tunes.  I think it is Baby Einstein and as much as I HATE Baby Einstein this one is small, inexpensive and the music sounds decent for a toy and the lights are not too obnoxiously bright

DD loves her exersaucer.  But I saw her in a jumperoo at daycare and man was she going kucoo for that thing!  I went out the next day and bought one off craigslist.  She just turned 5 months,

Manahattan toys are great.

Honestly, I just went on to Amazon's top 100 list and selected a few. I looked for things that little hands could grab and that had good reviews.

Maybe it is obvious to you, but I didn't think of this when I was a FTM. Get soft rattles instead of the hard plastic ones. I can't tell you how many times DS whacked himself in the face when he was an infant.

A playmat gym thing with all the dangling toys was also really nice to have.

The bendy O-ball, sophie, the baby Einstein's take along tunes, and the Sunny Stroll arch bar that we used on her rock and play. She LOVED that thing.

his soft monkey rattle

this stim mobile: Wimmer-Ferguson Stim Mobile (they make a toy that props up on the floor so your baby can look at it during tummy time)

Sassy Crib/Floor Mirror

His Oball

Fisher Price Rainforest Activity Gym
