Flu despite vaccine?

I got the flu vaccine in the beginning of September at my OB appointment. Despite this, yesterday and today I've been feeling symptoms akin to those of the flu. Specifically, my body and muscles ache a lot (not like the usual pregnancy kind) and my skin feels REALLY sensitive to touch and the temperature. I don't have a fever though (or at least I didn't last night). Could I be getting the flu or might it be something else?

Yes, you could have the flu.  There are many strains of the flu and your vaccine would only cover whatever the pharmaceutical companies decided to make and what they would make money on.  I have never had a flu vaccine and never have gotten the flu.  Go to the store (walmart or whole foods) and get a product by Boiron called oscillococcinum  follow the instructions and feel better!

Seriously, they make the vaccine based on what will get them more money? Just stop there.

OP, yes it is still possible. Since there is no way to know ahead of time what strains will pop up this year, RESEARCH is done to try and determine the most popular strains, which is what they use for the vaccine. Some years, there are multiple strains and you might have gotten on that isn't covered.

I would probably call my OB and just see what they say but I think it's a very good sign you don't have a fever.

This, they can make a prediction on the most common strains of the flu, so you may have gotten one that isn't coverd in the vaccine. Drink lots I fluids and watch you temperature. If you get a temperature take some regular Tylenol and call you doctor. There are other illnesses that an mimic flu symptoms so it could very well be something else, also. I hope you feel better soon

I read that this year's flu vaccine is a good match for the strain of the virus that is going around.  But you could still have the flu.  Or not.

You could have also had the strain in you before you got the shot and symptons have just now became pronounced. That is what happened to Z. He was 2 when we assumed he was exposed to shingles. My mom had caught them and she thought it was just a bad rash. We got Z the shot and then his sypmtons of the flu became apparent within weeks of having the shot.

Unfortunately the vaccine doesn't cover every strain of the flu so it's entirely possible but it could be something far simpler especially if you don't break a fever.

After getting the flu shot it takes your body 2 weeks to be fully protected, so it is definitely possible to get the flu after getting the shot, even if the strain is covered in the shot.

I hope you are not getting it and maybe just have a little cold.

Rather you get the shot or not everyone, wash your hands as much as you can, that makes a big difference.

And as for the "I have never gotten the shot and never had the flu" camp, that applies to me as well before being pregnant.  However, I decided to get it because our immune systems are suppressed, getting the flu pregnant can be really rough, and my understanding is that it will pass on some immunity to your baby.

Just my two cents.

Expecting our second baby on February 7, 2013. Trusting Him whatever comes our way.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011 at 20 weeks. She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

Or you could just have a nasty cold. Unless you get swabbed for the influenza virus and come back positive I wouldn't assume.

This.  There are so many cold viruses out there that mimic flu symptoms.  If you don't have a fever yet, chances are you probably have a cold.  The flu generally makes you feel like you're dying, at least in my experience.  Colds make you pretty miserable but not like the flu.

And yeah...pharmaceutical companies don't determine which strains are covered.  The CDC and FDA partner together and make the determination based on trends and tracking.  It's not some big conspiracy.  They're just trying to keep society protected from an illness that still kills tens of thousands each year.

See, that's what I'm confused about. I had a cold about 2.5 weeks ago and the cough is lingering but nothing is coming up... Could a cold piggy back another one?

It could be just another virus and not actually influenza.

First I make up the information, then I try to pass it off as fact.

I know a lot of smokers who have smoked all their lives and never had lung cancer, do you think I should take up smoking?

All of the above information is somewhat accurate (with the exception of the "whatever makes them the most money" bullshit).

You might not have any strain of the flu - the majority of people who are healthy will get common cold viruses that feel just as icky as the flu at some point in their lives.

You might have a strain of the flu that wasn't protected against in this year's vaccine - every year's flu vax is developed based on what researchers believe is the most likely course of evolution of the three main strains of the virus (A-H3N2, A-H1N1, and B), and while usually effective these vaccines cannot be called 100% effective. Every year that you get the vaccine (or a case of the flu), your body develops new antibodies to fight the *specific strains* of the flu you contracted or were vaccinated for. The more strains you are vaccinated against (or the more consecutive years you are vaccinated), the less likely you are to pick up older strains of the flu. Flu mutates - but it's not like every flu virus particle on the planet all mutates into the same strain all at once - older strains will continue to coexist with new strains for many years. Unless you've been vax'd for the flu every year for the last two decades, chances are you *will* contract some strain of the flu at some point - but every booster you get further reduces your over all chances of getting it.

I have seen many of your posts.  You worry waaaaaay too much.  Calm down, take some deep breaths, it's probably a cold.

It's possible, but if it is the flu, it is likely to be milder than it would otherwise be without the vaccine. If you don't develop a fever at all, it's less likely to be the flu though.

lol, seriously! As an epidemiologist with friends involved in this process, that is just absolutely ridiculous!
